Is there a way to identify a Packard head by the number that is on the head. I have one that has this number stamped or more like raised numbers 324285.

The number you see is likely not a part number but rather a casting number. Typically casting numbers were used where multiple different finished parts with their own individual numbers were produced from a common casting.

Casting number 324285 is for the STD compression head on a 115C, part number 324466.
The parts list shows this part number as being superseded by part number 348902 which is used for the 115C and 1938-39 sixes. The later number head may have a different casting number but would have been used as a service replacement for the 115C.

One of these days we are going to have to put all these into a spreadsheet for easy reference. Similar to what we did with the engine numbers.

That would be great, I wish I could publish a book that would list odd stuff like shims, etc.info you can't find in manuals.
