Well found a tool at work just like in the picture that Howard posted. Worked pretty good, note to self " Next time don't paint the two clips the springs hook to.". With everything being black, it makes it hard to hold a flashlight and hook the springs on the hooks, also install the adjustment screws first.

Well finally removed all the old wires and got the new wires installed. I used all of the old connectors that I could. It was slow going but it looks closer to original. Now put the headlight back in and the turn signal and see if the turn signal starts working, probably not but no big deal, should be able to figure that one out pretty quick.

Next moving on to the the shift linkage.

Will the fun never end.

Howard, I was looking at your Blog and on page 25, you talked about adding relays to power the headlights. Do you still have your drawings for adding the relays before I reinvent the wheel?

Here you go. I mounted the relays on a separate piece of metal as a bolt on module that would slide over and bolt to the fender flange under the L junction terminal block. The entire assy can easily be removed.

As an afterthought I drew in an optional 10ga ground wire that would connect the headlight grounds usually fastened to one of the mounting screws of the junction block directly to the battery ground cable connection on the engine block. The thinking was a larger direct ground might brighten the lights a tad more. As I said, an afterthought so did not add it on my car but could be done fairly easily. The stock ground is the same as most other Packards. Sheetmetal plus a 14ga ground wire typically connected at the other terminal block mounting screw connecting the generator frame ground to the regulator. That ground's primary purpose is for a reference connection so the regulator and generator are at the same potential and not relying on possibly rusty sheet metal affecting the generator output.

ptv, I won't tell if you won't!

Looks very clean and unless someone was looking real hard I thing it would be hard to notice.

I did notice you didn't have a stand off for a cover that goes over the original junction block, with the cover on I think it would be even harder to notice.

I was thinking, I could use an aircraft C/B and have it tucked away in there.

Here's some photos of mine, Drivers side lights still out, so you will notice the empty hold down below the top wire bundle coming from the other light.

The cover over the junction strip is an interesting idea. Don't think I have ever seen one used on a Packard -- postwar, at least. Have a few photos of other assumed to be stock cars without it so wonder if a dealership or mechanic added yours.

Wes;

That cover looks like an excellent way the hide my extra headlight wiring from critical eyes.

I installed essentially the same set-up mounted in essentially the same location in my '48. I used more of the open area to what I think is to the left in Howard's picture . . . closer to the cowl. The circuit breakers are closest to the cowl, then a gap for the hood locking mechanism, followed by the relays pointing to the terminal strip to accommodate the toe switch wiring.

I included two circuit breakers and parallel circuits, including the relays. I made this modification while I was installing the 'one wire' PowerMaster alternator. The output of the alternator is connected directly to the buss bar side of the circuit breaker, and then to the battery pole of the regulator. I now have a convenient location to attach another high current device (perhaps a cooling fan) directly to the alternator output.

This modification will reduce the current flow through the OEM light switch to that of the 2 relay coils, plus the rear light bulbs, about a 16 ampere reduction.

Well I would have to agree with you all, I've checked other photos and haven't seen a cover or stand off either. Here's a few pictures before I put it back on.

Well found fixing the wiring for the drivers side didn't fix the turn signal problem, so on to trouble shooting. But my question is about mounting the Parking/Signal Lights. The mounting screw looks like it should have a C clip on it and should there be any type of rubber spacing on the screw to add a little shock absorbing for the light fixture?

Also it looks like the wires in the headlight bucket on the passengers side are in worse shape, well that won't be a problem, already did one, so this one should be easier.

As always thanks for any and all help.
Wes

The screw appears to be brass that was chromed.
