I will clean it up and look for holes. I did not see any in the part that actually goes down into the manifold. but the tube is pressed into the top of the hex and it is a square pushed into a circle...so I guess that could be where it is pulling air.

basically it is a bolt...drilled down the center, but not all the way through. then a square with the choke tube in the middle of the square is pressed into the hole in the top of the bolt.

all I know is it works.

Henry, yes the illustration I was referring to is for the Stromberg. Just verifying that they used a different method for working the auto choke. Agree with Howard, don't see how the arrangement you have would allow for hot air to be drawn into the choke housing. Carry on and good luck.

easy enough to fix with this kit. one could drill a hole in the bottom of the piece that goes into the manifold. then press this kit in the top after removing the existing choke tube.

it seemed to work fine though...so i'll probably just clean it up and keep using it.

I think the unit Fred is talking about is a unit that mounts in the Stromberg choke stove and converts to the choke tube as used on the carter.

but my manifold has already been modified for this add on thing, so it is just easier for me the plug the hole in the choke stove with a freeze plug and use the hole they drilled in the manifold.

Henry,
The stove pipe on the V8 is straight thru the manifold, and open on the bottom, so air enters underneath, heats up on the way out to the carburetor. Or that's how it appears to me.

This one on the 37 looks like a closed system. It doesn't seem to be able to draw outside air. Is that a fair statement.

Maybe I don't understand how this system is supposed to work. To the books.

it actually does allow air in. through the sides of the square. a square peg in a round hole has openings all the way around.

I sprayed carb cleaner down the tube after cleaning it and sure enough it came spraying out around the square. so it does indeed suck air in and it is heated by the manifold.

I put a new copper o-ring on it and painted it with 2000 degree header paint, leaving the tube unpainted.

Ok, good to know it works.

Since this design has the inlet on top, I guess you just have to keep it free from dirt, oil, grease or rust from accumulating, as opposed to having the opening facing downward, like the V8 design.

have many pictures of transmission teardown and what was wrong with the last transmission.

but for now....has anyone sourced a modern replacement for the rear felt oil seal on the 37 120 trans?

it is 2-1/4" outside diameter and 1-5/8" inside accounting for wear.

I'm going to take a stroll to the auto store and rummage through the seals, but thought maybe someone already did the leg work.

looks like maybe ground 3.232 part number 302591 one vender has this listed in a modern arrangement, but for 30 bucks

saw this from HH, but this seems to be form later cars maybe. looks like it is too wide at 2.6" I need more like 2.25

The seal xref says 302591 crosses to a Victor 49665 or a C/R 6069. The SKF interchange does not have a match for either number. Here is a bit from the Utility page showing dimensions for that Packard number. If you can verify the artsy and blurry inner dimension number is 1 5/8" maybe the store can come up with something.
