Dave, I was just surprised to see bronze since almost every other factory casting or forging was pot metal, aluminum, or whatever steel or iron treatment was appropriate. Only time I ever saw bronze was in repro stuff like the repro AC compressor bracket the fellow made years ago in bronze and a few modern day things. Seeing this clutch bracket made me wonder why bronze but as long as it works, why argue with success.

On the first 47 I ever played with and briefly owned, managed to get the silly clutch working reasonably well. Lost track of that car and is now another of those "I wonder why I ever let go" deals. If I get that far this time around, hope it turns out workable too.

Very little accomplished since the last posting other than cleaning and painting of bolt ons while waiting for arrival of some orders. Not much else has happened. Ordered some manifold paint and misc hardware items.

Getting finalized on an order for rubber which brings one of todays questions. Were any grommets on the defroster pipe openings or did the hose just get close and personal to the firewall.

Another question is for anyone that might have the optional windshield washer. I don't have a complete unit & probably won't bother but just on the chance one should fall into my hands, was there a designated opening in the firewall? There are several knockout spots visible on the firewall below the defroster and just to the side that could be candidates. The only picture I could find showed the bottle and pump but no hoses.

Final question for this post is the center dash panel. The 21st series accessory book shows a knob labeled "Cooling". That particular button is not listed in the regular parts manual. Any chance that it was a switch actually for prewar AC or just artistic license on the part of the illustrator who did the accessory book.

Grommets, yes. I found some at Ace HW that worked.

Also I shipped you a can of brown paint I had specially mixed for 1940.

Lighter colors were used for 41. There's more about it here if you recall.
But your photo of the column, close to the floorboard looks darker brown.

It won't get there for a week. Mailed aerosol paint has to go ground.

Your "Cooling" knob is where my Electromatic Clutch switch is located. The switch is not operable, just secured in place. Do not know if my Clipper came with the Electro Clutch and it was later removed; or, did it come that way even though not equipped with the clutch option? I guess Packard had to put something in the hole.

I am off to the storage place today to swap out the 55 Clipper for the 37 Six. While there I will visit the 47 Clipper. I will look at the steering column and shifter tube, cowl wall grommets, and what else would you like for me to do while there?

JW, many thanks and appreciate the offer. If you could look at the color of the hood release brackets & levers and cowl vent operating knob bracket. Are they are the same brown as the steering column or a more greyish color. Also there is a fender welt type material around the windshield inside finish molding. My molding is chrome and assume yours is too. Is the welt just a generic tan or maybe even silver. Mine looks tan but may just be filthy. Options from Steele are chrome vinyl or black vinyl as replacements. Neither is probably the right choice but probably the chrome next the the molding wouldn't look too bad. Could you also verify if there is any welting around the rear window finish molding or any other window moldings.

Howard, will do. I do know that the welting material around the chrome plated windshield garnish frame is a tan color. I try and get photos of all the items.

Howard, et al: Going to use up a little band width with this one.

Hood latches, rod and levers appear to be painted to resemble a natural steel. The lever part that comes through the cowl wall is painted black.

Hood supports. Just a photo to show you how I use two of them.

Heater connections through cowl wall do not have any grommets. Grommets would look improve the appearance.

Windshield garnish molding welting. Looks to be wrapped in a tan leatherette material. It is a bit faded in some places where the sun has shown on it.

Steering column is chrome on top, but painted on lower portion. Like the one Wes showed.

This is all good information.

I have a question about bolts. What kind of finish was applied at the factory to prevent rusting? When I repainted my shroud in front of the radiator, I carefully wire brushed the bolts. Now they are rusting, as I must have removed the protective coating. Do they need to be re-plated?
