Hi all,

Time to rebuild the freshly rebuilt water pump... I'm a pretty handy guy. What does it take to rebuild it myself?

Alternatively, what's a good place to send it to and have it rebuilt?

Thanks in advance,
Crin

Two of the best in the business, Gould Rebuilders up in New England and Terrill Machine in TX. Can't go wrong with either.

What year and model is the pump in question from?

...believe we are dealing with a 36-320, same as your 34 pump. Not complicated, two bearings on a shaft with an old style packing seal. I am told the trick is to have a really smooth shaft and carefully seat the old style packing seal, surely something that could be done locally with care and patience. Oh, and go with sealed bearings, no one will know, I promise.

Yes, that's a very easy pump to do, but an excellent shaft is essential to a long-lasting rebuild and if you need to have a new shaft made, a good grade of tool steel is much preferred over stainless.

I used sealed bearings and corded packing when I did mine and that was over 40 years ago.

Hi Owen,
Just curious, what is the concern with a stainless steel water pump shaft?

Galling. Stainless is much more susceptible to it than good tool steels.
