Jack. It is probably best to check the STB's that HH56 has cited.

Then what's needed for my 56 Exec. ????

When the rear of the car is setting with the bottom of the fender skirt 1/4 inch above centre of the red Hex in the wheel cover then the front of the car is setting low by about 3/4 inch and there is 1 to 1-1/4 inch ride control at the front suspension rubber snubbers.

The car has a 4 ringer on the right side and a 2 ringer on the left side. AC pump on left side. 75 pounds of routine junk i need to carry anyway in the trunk and situated to keep car transversly level.

4 ringer is the longest packard made???? I already have a 4 ringer on the right side. If i put a 4 ringer on the left side then that side will go up leaving the right side low????

John There should be room on the data plate for the dealer. My two '47's each have the dealer name stamped on them. One way I found out who the original owner of my Super Clipper was to write a letter to the local paper in the town where I bought the car asking if anyone had any information about owners of the car as I knew who the second owner was and included his name.. An 85 year old woman phoned me who was the sister of the 2nd owner and she knew the name of the original owner and also sent me photos of the car when her brother (2nd owner) bought the car in 1955 and also a bio and photo of her long departed brother. I still haven't found any relations of the original owners yet. Another source of info is the old city directories (Henderson's up here in Canada) which lists businesses and also the addresses and occupations of person listed in them. It is nice to know a cars history. I sometimes have a feeling when I am working on the car that the previous owners are looking over my shoulder making sure I take good care of their "baby".
If St Joseph has a paper that might be the place to start.
I have a discharge paper for a Civil War veteran that has been in my family possession for at least 75 years. I had no idea who the person was or whether or not a relation but I posted the info on a Civil war site and in a few days someone sent me a history of the unit he served with and particulars about his age and where he enlisted etc. so maybe a posting on a Civil war site might yield some sources. Now for a dram of Mccallan's before bed time.

Jack Vines
Thanks for the prompt reply. An inference would be:

Autolite was used on Clippers and Golden Hawks, which could be had with a manual transmission, so less initial advance was used.

Delco was used on the senior cars, which could not be had with manual, so more initial advance was used.

Second, 30 degrees total timing as the specs furnished above is way short, so Packard must have been having some complaints about pinging.

thnx, jack vines

Again been many years since I have had to do this, as years ago good used sending units were about 5 to 10 dollars each and everyone wanted to unload them. Worked on many cars and I seem to remember doing this once. What you can do (I think) if you have enough clip leads or wire. Is, bring the sending unit to the front seat, where you can connect it up as if it was in the gas tank, but with you looking at the gauge. The gauge acting as the ohm meter. Now you can move the arm up and down, and sideways slowly to see if you have any open spots. It doesn't take much. Or if the wiper is lifting off of the wire. Or if you have an extra battery and gauge you can do on your bench. I seem to remember opening one of these up at one time. It would have been for a prewar senior model. I think I remember bending the wiper just a bit to make up for sideways slack in the arm and bushing. Burnishing the contact with a piece of business card and some sort of solvent, probably brake parts cleaner, but not for sure. Then I believe this unit used a couple of rivets to put the top back on. Also just thought, make sure the arm is not hanging up on only one position.

Less,

There are now 2 Owner Registry entries for your'47 Clipper, each one different. Might be good to combine the two descriptions into one of them then have BigKev delete the extra entry.

Also remembered in 56 they made a change from dists listed in shop manual. Those new dist specs are listed on TB56-14 for Senior cars and TB56-19 for Clippers. Also available here on site.
