Re: BigKev's 1954 Packard Clipper Deluxe Sedan

Well I took those rims I bought at the PI swapmeet back to Dan Yocum for exchange today. They didnt fit on my '54 Clipper, even though they came off his 54 Super Clipper.

I remember talking to Albert (from the AACA) forums, and he had mentioned that he had come across three different bolt patterns on the '54 model year.

My '54 was one of the last cars of the assembly line in '54, so it appears that it has a 55 junior bolt pattern hubs.

So anyway I went up to exchange the rims today for the correct ones. I brought my brake drum with me and we had to look through several different rims before we found two that matched up with my drum.

I also picked up a 4-way brass splitter for the oil filter, pressure sender plumbing.

I look around his Packard grave yard he has in the back of his place. At one time he had over fourty 51-56 Packards in the back of his place. But the city made him get rid of most of the cars. So now he has a few 56 Clippers, a 54 Limo, and 53 Patty. Plus piles of blocks, heads, rear ends, fenders, hoods, bumpers, grilles, and other pieces like that in the yard. He also has a shed full of trim. (both interior and exterior).

**Eric** He has a manual transmission and a manual bellhousing out of a 56 Caribbean he once owned. Just thought I would pass that along.

I have attached a few pictures of what he has. All the rain has caused the grass to grow like crazy, so it almost like a field of hidden Packard parts.

-Enjoy

Smoking? Nothing. I just happened to notice this when I was searching e-bay, and I was just wanting to know if anyone on here would consider buying it. I know I wouldn't, and I have a pretty good sense of humor.

I don't know what it's from, I just went in the back of Oreilly's and started pulling boxes off the shelf and looking at them.

The 1601 came in two wheelbases, 127 for the factory bodies, and 1602 (139 inch) for Rollston-bodied series of quasi-customs. 1602 is an Eight (120) on the long 148 inch wheelbase for the inexpensive limousine and 7-pass sedan.

Just to round out the picture for you, 1603, 04 and 05 were Super Eights on 127, 134 and 139 inch wheelbases. And 1607 and 1608 were Twelves on 134 and 139 inch wheelbases.

Commonly accepted production numbers were: Six (110) - 30,050; Eight (120) - 22,624; Super Eight - 2478; and Twelve - 566. As you can see, the Super Eight and Twelves, which are bona fide Classics, were far outnumbered by the inexpensive bretheren.

I'm not aware of a 1601A, but the 1601D is an Eight (120) on the 127 inch wheelbase that came only in a 5 passenger sedan.

Phil,

Thanks for the nice talk we had yesterday in the Chat Room and welcome to the site.

You'll find a lot of friendly, knowledgable and experienced Packard people here willing to help and share.

And can you get your 38 Coupe and 41 Sedan into the Owner Registry together with pic's and known history, please?

Again

Thanks - that's pretty much what I thought. Just curious what is a 1601A and a 1602? And yes the vin starts with 1195

1938 can be a tough year because it's the only year that Packard replaced the metal patent plate (containing the vehicle number) with a decal which more often than not has turned to dust. If this has happened there is no way to recover your true vehicle number except perhaps thru documentation.

If in fact your body is an 1195 (that is, the vehicle number begins with 1195-), then your car is a chassis 1601, called an Eight for that year but otherwise known as a "120", and the body was called a Club Coupe (2-4 passengers). For 1938 there were 4 Packard lines, starting from the bottom the Six (aka 110), your car, the Super Eight, and the Twelve.

Being new to Packards, all the different nomenclature to describe these cars has me asea. I have a 38 Club Coupe std 8 jr. I've heard this called an Opera Coupe at times. Also supposedly it's an 1195 body and 16th series. How do I know if it's a 1601, 1601A or 1602? I'm getting brain aches trying to get this sorted out.

Yes. i remeber vividly that u documented it at AACA. At that time i was unable to start this project. i'M READY TO START IT NOW. tHANKS FOR THE INFO.

btw, THE MASTER CYLINDER APPEARS TO BE A gm CA 1973-1983 ISH. Probably "G" van series.

1999 Ranger, which, BTW, is available in manual. The master cylinder is NOT a Ranger, as the Ranger master cylinder has the line outlets on the driver's side and would interfere with the fenderwell. Also, it goes in the hole that the driver's side vent tube uses, so you'll have to cut off the lip on the engine side of the firewall to allow the unit to sit flush. As for not being centered, the pedal arm re-aligns it so it does sit where the original pedal was, although it's a little lower than stock. And, you'll have to tie in the pedal assembly to the steering column to make it all secure. (which, BTW, I haven't done yet)

As a side note, all the details of this were on the AACA forum until the PeterG got a heavy hand and deleted everything I ever wrote. I did all this to years ago and it's worked fine ever since.
