Pinion Seal Replacement

Hi,
The rear end of my transmission on my 56 Patrician is dripping ATF. I got a pinion seal, and removed the drive shaft. To my surprise, it seems that my universal joint flange bolt is completely missing. So now I have two questions. 1) What size bolt do I need? 2) How do I separate the flange from the rest of the transmission, so that I can install the new pinion seal? Thanks! John

I just wanted to send a thank you and follow up message. My problem turned out to be the oil pan being overtightened and warped. To give you a little bit of a back story. I bought the car January 2022. I took it to an "old car mechanic" in upstate New York. Someone recommended him, and he had a DeSoto sitting out side, so I figured how bad could he be... He replaced the oil pan gasket, and complained that transmission fluid was coming out of the screw holes. He said that he fixed with RTV.
Last year I moved to Finland, and this time I decided to give it a shot myself. I removed the transmission oil pan. While cleaning the pan, I found multiple colors of sealers and gaskets. All the bolts and bolt holes were also covered in RTV. With a straight edge, I could see that the first edge of the pan was relatively straight, however the metal around the bolt holes were all warped. I ended up putting a few blocks of wood for support, and using a hammer and a large round bolt to tap all the bolt holes back down. After cleaning all the bolts and bolt holes, I put in a new cork gasket. I didn't use any RTV, just a bit of vaseline on the gasket, and hand tightened the pan. After a few weeks of driving, the transmission pan has held well. I still have a ton of leaks to fix, but at least the big one is now done. Oh, and for the loose bolt. Someone had drilled out one of the bolts through the transmission, and replaced it with a longer bolt and nut on the other end. For now I just put it back in since the gasket works.

Twin Ultramatic Transmission oil pan bolts

Hello,
I have a 1956 Patrician. I had the transmission oil pan gasket replaced because it was leaking, however the leak continues. The mechanic said that someone has over tightened the bolts, so at least some of them are stripped, and no longer hold. He also said that oil was coming out directly from under the bolts. It sounds like I will need to retap the bolt holes, but before doing that I was thinking that maybe there is some thread left farther in the bolt hole. Any chance that longer bolts would be able to hold the transmission oil plan in place? I do not have access to the car right now, so I am not able to access the bolts themselves. Does anyone know what the specs are for the bolts that come from the factory? Thanks! John

Thanks for all the help. I was able to weld the pin onto the backing plate, and the hinge works well again.

Thanks for the info. I moved to Finland last summer, so I will probably try to create a temporary fix for now, and get a replacement when visiting the US.

1956 Patrician trunk hinge

Hi,
One of the pieces fell off the trunk hinge on my 1956 Patrician. It looks like there is a pin that goes through a bracket (that con move freely) which then goes through a backing plate that it is pressed into. The issue is that over time, the hole in the backing plate has become bigger, and the pin pops out. Now that the hole is too big, what is the best way to secure it? I have tried with a snap ring, and thought about replacing the pin with a bolt and nut, but I don't think that is the right solution. It seems like what is needed is to secure the pin to the backing plate. Would jb-weld work for this? Or how about fixing it by spot welding the pin to the plate? The bracket needs to be able to move freely. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, John

I just wanted to wrap things up here. If anyone is interested in OCR versions of the 1955-56 documentation, they are available at my original drop box link:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/f9x3shj2137g2mm/AAAdFOU_5IEusrrK_5W23lCsa?dl=0 They are generated files, and so the handwritten parts are not 100% correct, but they are good enough for me. At this point, I am not planning on running the conversion on other files. However, if there is a specific set of files, that someone would like me to run the OCR on, feel free to get in touch with me.
