Thanks everyone for schooling me again. Fortunately for me, my project is a ground up restoration, so I will be working from the oil pan up. I still haven't done enough research on exactly how to deal with the aluminum, but you have all given me good information to research about exactly how to properly clean, and if necessary, seal it. Thanks again.

I have heard that glass bead blasting is a good way to get the layers of crud off the aluminum without creatiing a mirror finish. Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Hi Jim,
I measured my pulley off the 645 water pump. The dimensions match the ones on your sketch exactly, except the width of the belt pathway. Your sketch shows it as 1 1/8 inches, and mine measures 1 inch wide. Not sure what to make of that. John Wogec

Hello,
As usual, you guys have schooled me again. So, sounds like Jim Wayman's engine has the same configuration as my 645 (145 inch wheelbase, seven passenger sedan), but not necessarily the same pulley (and water pump)dimensions. Given that Jim provided very good drawings, I will measure my wheel pulley tonight after work and report back. Great workshop on water pump configurations for the 1929 cars!

Hello,
Being a newbie, I am confused by the references to the "small" and "big" engines. I have a 645 with the "inset" water pump. I have attached photos...hopefully that process worked. Is this what you are talking about?

1929 closed car footrest brackets...forging ahead
|

Hi Everyone,
I recently had brass castings made for the footrest brackets of my 1929 645 Sedan...some of you may be able to relate... 84 year-old pot metal that was literally crumbling. Well, I sent them to some guy out here on the west coast with a flashy website that makes claims about the incredible work they do. The first sign of trouble was when he said they could turn them around in "a couple of weeks". The next hint of a less than smooth landing was when I started emailing a month later and got replies about them coming soon. When I finally got the pock-marked castings back, he claimed he had the forge make sixteen separate sets, and these were the best. he had no idea why they came out so bad...he had never seen that before. At this point, my check had long since been cashed. Well, after having flushed $250 on two really funky looking paperweights, I am going to forge ahead (pun intended)and have my originals 3D scanned and computer milled out of stainless steel...same technology Jay Leno uses. I know it will be ordcers of magnitude more expensive to make just two....so, if anyone is interested, I will have the AutoCad drawings saved on a diskette, and if mine turn out as good as I hope, I would be willing to have more than one set cut. I figure, the more possible sets I get made, the more of a volume discount I can get. I am working from originals that have had the nickel plating professionally stripped, the defects filled with resin, and lovingly hand sanded under a magnifying glass by yours truly...don't ask how I spent my Thanksgiving week. So...let me know if there is anyone out there who might be considering a set...assuming mine turn out okay. Who knows, if this works out, maybe I will learn AutoCad and buy a CNC machine...not! At any rate, it may make for entertaining reading, and I am learning so much!

Thanks very much. I emailed and within an hour they sent me a similar drawing for my car. Exactly what I needed. Not sure I have the right process for submitting stuff for the website. I have tried to submit a .pdf of the 1929 Owners Manual. I just sent off the Bijur diagram as a .PDF attachment to an email addressed to bigkev@packardinfo.com. hopefully he gets it.

Hi,
I have a 1929 Seven Passenger Sedan. Not sure of what you need to see. My car still has the original interior, so all a picture will show is how the cloth meets up with the door frame. I would be happy to send whatever pics you think may help.

Hi,
Can I ask for your source for drip plugs and tubing? I am at the same point for my 1929. Hopefully they are the same. Also, do you know the size of each drip plug for each location on the car? Thanks for any help you can offer.
