1929 640 Water pump/fan hub pulley

Took my pulley with water pump shaft into the machine shop to have a new shaft made. They broke the pulley removing the shaft. Anyone have a spare pulley or even a complete worn out water pump they would sell. As far as I can tell from the parts books, it is unique to the large eights of this year. It is the type of water pump that is inset into the front of the engine block, not offset to the side. I have attached some sketches.

Any help appreciated.

What you call check valves are actually metering valves with a filter (known as drip plugs), metering different amounts of oil depending on the specific location's requirement. For example, the clutch throwout bearing gets less oil than spring shackles. The lubricant used was Bijur Oil which is approximated today by either SAE-50W motor oil, or SAE-85 gear oil.

I think it will depend on which parts book you're referring to in regards to differences in water pump. Early and late. Many, if not most, of the small eights were retrofitted with the "side winder" water pump, as the one driven off the shaft was problematic. But, there are a few small eights with the original water pump. I don't know if it's the same as for the big eight, though.

Hello,

Being a newbie, I am confused by the references to the "small" and "big" engines. I have a 645 with the "inset" water pump. I have attached photos...hopefully that process worked. Is this what you are talking about?

The "small" engine (626, 633) has a 3-3/16 bore for 320 cubic inches. The "large" engine (640, 645) has a 3-1/2 bore for 385 cubic inches. Both have a 5 inch stroke. This continued thru 1936 when the smaller engine was the "Eight" (sometimes incorrectly called the Standard Eight) and the larger engine the "Super Eight".

When the 6-cylinder engine was dropped, the small eight was substituted into a space formerly occupied by the 6; the space was restricted for the waterpump and thus the change to the sidemounted pump for the smaller 8-cylinder engine. This was a 1-year feature. See picture. On those few early models w/o the sidemounted pump and not retrofitted, it was necessary to tip the radiator forward to get enough clearance to service the pump, not a trivial job.

From what you say, it sounds as if the original shaft-driven water pump for the 626/633 was NOT the same as for the 640/645. Is that correct?

We had a 633 sport phaeton that still had the shaft-driven water pump. I bet we had it rebuilt 4 times before we finally sold the car. Great running car, otherwise.

West, are you asking if the conventional, front-mounted (in the block) water pump for the 626/633 was the same pump as the 640/645? Don't know but I guess the answer is in the parts book. If you jump ahead a few years to 1933, though the pumps are similar between the Eight and the Super Eight, they are not the same.

Hello,

As usual, you guys have schooled me again. So, sounds like Jim Wayman's engine has the same configuration as my 645 (145 inch wheelbase, seven passenger sedan), but not necessarily the same pulley (and water pump)dimensions. Given that Jim provided very good drawings, I will measure my wheel pulley tonight after work and report back. Great workshop on water pump configurations for the 1929 cars!

Hi Jim,

I measured my pulley off the 645 water pump. The dimensions match the ones on your sketch exactly, except the width of the belt pathway. Your sketch shows it as 1 1/8 inches, and mine measures 1 inch wide. Not sure what to make of that.
