Wow, Jim, I am envious. I've been busy sanding what I've primed and replacing (correcting) fasteners. My steering column is out of the car so I can clean it up and paint it, so no driving. Here's the last time I drove my 1377, Memorial Day a couple of years ago. Also looking for a dashpot to control the throttle when the overdrives disengages. And a jack.

I can see that the trunk rack was cannibalized. There are 6 bolt holes in the bumper, so the guards can be moved away from the center (without mounting them in that ridiculous looking outer position) and the rack can come down with out hitting the guards. Mine is one of the earliest 40s, sold on announcement day in Aug '39, and there are several differences compared to those built after Feb '40, so I wouldn't rule out that a trunk rack bumper could have a Packard script logo. Also plain is that the license bracket/light fixture was high on the trunk to be above the rack when it's up. The bumper brackets would be longer, too. Fetish or not, there are exceptions, such as contentions about no belt line pin striping.

This is a sorry story. There must be some memorabilia to retrieve if and before Detroit is allowed to demolish it.
http://www.manufacturing.net/News-Detroit-Wants-Old-Packard-Plant-Torn-Down-070910.aspx No Michigan Region of either Packard club. At least the front doors and portico should be preserved.

Interior metal parts paint color 1940
I'm restoring a 1940 conv sedan 1803. The conv top rails were painted the same color as the steering column, a brown color. It was used in all the 40s. The auto paint stores can't get a reading on curved parts like the steering column (which I hauled in there) so we ended up guessing. Does anyone have the x-ref for this color? I couldn't find a name for in in my Parts List or Jim Hollingsworth book on 1940s.
