Vapor Lock on the '55 Clipper Suoer
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Trog
Well, it would appear on this 97-98 degree very hot day that my '55 Clipper Super vapor locked on me on the interstate at about 60 mph. Never happened before on any of my Packards, not even my warm running '53 Clipper Deluxe. But as it was hesitating I was able to flip on the priming electric pump and it settled out. But I got off the interstate and took back roads home for about 15 miles. Then less than a mile from home turf as I approached the top of a hill, it hesitated and shut down on me before going over the top even with the electric pump on. Started right up and managed to limp home where it idled ok. Checked both filters I have on the car and only a small amount of debris and I would not expect much over the years at all because the tank was renued with the coating in it a few years back. The transparent filter had some discoloration but very little residue in the bottom. My Hudson Super Wasp did a similar thing a couple weeks ago but that isn't anything new for it. And my brother's '56 Lincoln Premiere had to have the primer pump activated on several of the last few outings. The gas must really be getting bad now and they all advertise up to 10% ethanol. Anyone else experience any vapor locking?

I know that Dan Yocum has the elements also. I swapped out my 6v elements for some 12v ones he had. But he also had a box of 6 volt ones.

Weld is most likely problem. Doubt if repairable either so probably time to start looking for another. Max Merritt has new elements for a price as will other vendors, but should be easy to find complete used ones in good condition & you can just unscrew and transfer the element. Element same from 48-54.

I see the 12v has a much finer element. Brian

Yes,The center is crimped and I THOUGHT the outside was welded.Well one is the other is not.Yes the one that doesn't work is not welded. My fathers ohm meter died today.(Needs batterys.)I can see where the weld seems to have broken. This must be the problem? Yes,no? Brian

Here is readings I get from a 47 6 volt and a 56 12 volt. The values are approximate since at that low range, even the meter cables and probe connections can distort the reading. The black clip is on the metal outer edge and the red point is the center pin-(sorry about covering the 12v--it didn't want to co-operate). At any rate, yours should have some continuity between the center pin and the edge where element attaches. On both of these lighters, the center pin looks like it might have a slot which was crimped onto element and maybe a spot weld on the outer edge.
