The way the economy is going antique cars are likely to be very hard to sell, and very hard to finance, for the forseeable future.

Experts are saying the present deflation period may last for years. It is possible that if you were ever forced to sell you would get half what it was worth before the deflation set in.

Prices have not dropped that much yet and they may never do so. But unless I could afford to blow $100,000 and laugh it off I wouldn't take the chance.

Have you heard the latest? Obama announced on Monday that unless GM can negotiate with their creditor to renew $1 billion of short term debt, there will be no bailout.

This effectively means GM is doomed and the white house knows it. Here's why.

The big banks are not going to negotiate on that debt if they have Credit Default Swaps from AIG. So far, everyone who holds such CDS's has been paid off 100% by the US taxpayer. So why should they take any less?

They will let GM go into bankruptcy before they do that.

The banks know this and the white house knows this.

The union will have to reduce their health care fund demands as well. Fat chance. They have already made their position plain.

Too bad about the little guys who hold GM notes with no CDS protection. Too bad about the shareholders. Too bad about their creditors, the parts suppliers who will go bankrupt, and all the GM employees and others who get hosed.

But it might just save GM. If they can be reorganized with no debt and no pension liabilities, basically start over from scratch, they should be able to compete in the market and show a profit.

It's interesting that the president and congress will pay anything - ANYTHING - billions or trillions of dollars to bail out the crooks who caused this mess. Even though the dud banks could be written off and no one would miss them. But they won't do anything to keep the auto industry in the US, even though once it's gone it can never be replaced.

O ya the president's advisers are all from the same banks that caused this mess in the first place.

Yep Levi still has it. He is still in the tare down process. But will be on the road some day. I will make sure he gets on here and post.

The '50 is just my weekend cruiser. I am working on getting it restored but I enjoy driving it in the mean time. I also a 56 executive that needs put together and I am building a 27 roadster, all different parts but Packard powered.(couldnt afford/ find a 27 Packard roadster.)

For what it's worth foreign cars don't appear to be selling either. There's an article on CNN.comhttp://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/wayoflife/04/01/aa.cars.built.before.sold/index.html that there is a 245 acre parking lot between the port of Los Angeles and Long Beach that is filled with cars, mfgs are leasing extra space at businesses & airports and thousands more cars are on container ships anchored waiting to unload or still at sea.

Wow! My brain hurts from all that information, but I appreciate it very much. No such thing as too much Packard info.
From everything I've heard and read, I think I'll start with a 1952 Packard 300. My Dad had one when I was 12 years old and I still remember it's beauty.
If anyone knows where I can find a 2-tone 1952 Packard 300 that needs some TLC, please let me know at Larenc@clearwire.net

Good question, I don't really know of any official body assigned to defining "junior" and "senior" so there are no doubt a variety of interpretations. (Might be interesting to see how the Milestone Car Society has treated this). The definition I gave is mine and I believe is generally shared with most Packard folks, but others may certainly differ. For a borderline case look at the 54 Cavalier; first it's a Packard in the senior car line, not a Clipper, and based on that you'd say "senior". Yet it's the only Packard-line car in 1954 to NOT have the senior engine, so you could say it's a "junior-senior"?

My own thought on the 23rd series Super DeLuxe is that nice as they were, they were almost a full 25% cheaper than the Custom 8, and a significantly less refined and elegant product; to me it's not Senior but that's just my opinion.

One thing that's sometimes forgotten with this "junior-senior" business is that, before the introduction in 1935 of the 120 which many consider the first "junior", there were several series of Packards in different prices classes in most every year, so some were more junior than others. And Packard had other moves downward in price (and expense); for example when the Single 8 replaced the Twin Six. And when the Twin Six replaced the Dominant Six. But the difference is that even the lesser Packards of this era, for example the Single Six, the Light Eight, etc. were still upper price class cars, whereas the 120 was decidely not. And the 110 was damn near in the lower price class.

What year and model car are we talking about? Code "F" represented quite a few different colors depending on year, but never represented a two-tone scheme, at least postwar.

It's unheard of to my knowledge that the car left the factory with a different paint scheme than shown on the ID plate. I suspect part if not all of your car has been repainted at some point, take a closer look as even the very best of repaints can leave a clue somewhere.
