I would recommend contacting the guys as ABS Power Brakes.http://www.abspowerbrake.com/ I purchased I believe it was the 10-57 brake setup which is a master cylinder 57 master cylinder which is a firewall mount with a remote brake fluid reservoir. I am very happy with this setup. I have attached some photos of the setup

Update:

I pulled the diff out yesterday. I checked the ratio and it's a 3.54 ratio, ( 11 teeth on the pinion, 39 on the gear) unfortunately the hardening on the ring gear is worn, which would explain why it has been noisy. It looks like its time for a new gear set. I'll start the search for a new set, does anyone know of any sets available, I'd prefer a new set rather than a used set. I'me not quite up to speed with the Dana 44 or 60 models, do these gear sets fit the 55 model or only the 56 models.

Many thanks,
Mathew

That's quite good mileage. I'm not sure what mine gets yet, but I don't think its quite that good. It was good to see some new cars at the rally this year.

I removed my dual carb setup as I didn't have the original linkages and as it wasn't tuned correctly was using Alot of fuel so I'm back to using the single 4bbl.

I know my diff needs looking at, hopefully its nothing too major. From this discussion I think my best option would be to stick with the 3.54 and just get the diff quiet again. At the moment I'm putting new carpet in the car so once that's done I'll get the diff sorted.

I'll send Bendtsen a PM and see what he recommends. From the sounds of things 3.54 would be the way to go.

Noel's 41 is looking nice. Hoopefully won't be too much longer before we get to see another Packard on the roads of Aus.

700r4 Real axle ratio

Hi All,

Down here in Australia we have enjoyed our national Packard Rally in the Hawkesbury, NSW. It was a great rally and my 1955 Packard went very well with the 700r4 transmission. This is defiantly a much better gear box than the torqueflite 727.

The only issue I have at the moment with the car is a noisy differential. It whines quite loud so I will be looking at getting this sorted soon. When I purchased the my Caribbean it has a manual transmission in it. From what I recall the car currently has a 3.54 ratio diff in it. This was probably put in to work with the manual box. Considering I now have a new gearbox installed it might be worth putting in a higher ratio diff. I was wondering if others out there with the 700r4 conversion have made changes to their diff gearing, and if so what are you running and what would you recommend. Would it be beneficial to change to a 3.07 or go lower or higher?

Many thanks,
Mathew

Thanks Peter & Craig, It sure was good to catch up at Mildura. If I turn the T-L off it will still move around and by the end of the trip (and during the trip) the car will end up with the nose up or down.

torsion level question

Hi Guys,

This question has probably been asked before, I am finding that when i'm driving the 55 Caribbean it is constantly adjusting the level of the vehicle. After speaking to other 55-56 owners in the Australian Packard club they have advised me that their vehicles do not constantly adjust when they drive the vehicle. Has anyone experienced an issue like this? Is the car meant to keep level or keep adjusting its self?

Many thanks,
Mathew

727 transmission cooler?
#48

Hi Guys,

Well, I'm slowly getting there with the 55 Caribbean, After having the engine re-rebuilt and same with the gearbox, I am now experiencing an annoying problem... I am running the 727 torqueflite behind the 374cui Packard v8, I am running the OEM transmission cooler. After about 40-50 minutes of driving the gearbox began slipping and soon I had no direct drive, so I stopped the car and after about 10 minutes I wad able to drive the car a bit further before the same thing would happen. (Luckily I wasn't too far from home and was able to limp it home) Upon inspecting the oil It smelt and looked burnt. I have got new oil lines so I am guessing that maybe the original cooler isn't working or not well enough? :( I will be looking at possibly bypassing the original cooler and put an bigger aftermarket cooler on instead.

This is also a newly rebuilt gearbox - A bearing went in the torque converter (after 'supposably' being rebuilt less than 2000 miles ago) I was wondering has anyone experienced similar issues with the oil cooler or can provide any other suggestions?

I am sort of regretting installing the 727 conversion kit and not opting for the 700r4 conversion. At the time I had a Dodge Charger with a 727 and absolutely loved that gearbox...

Cheers,
Mat

With the training films the transcription records (larger than standard size records) provide the audio companion for the filmstrips. They take a bit of time to convert but are great to watch

Hi All,

On the topic of videos, I have acquired a large collection of 1948-51 filmstrips. I am in the process of converting these to DVD possibly to sell... (similar to those available on ebay etc) These take quite a few hours of work to convert but I was wondering is there any copyright still imposed on these videos? I have uploaded a preview to:
