Painting hubcaps-
Home away from home
Home away from home

dallas
I'm having my 46 Clipper deluxe hubcaps replated. Upon return I will need to paint the center areas. I'm looking for some guidance and tips so the job will look like original. I've been practicing freehand on a spare and it looks like crap. Can someone help? thanks

Rear of back seat only has been added. There was no rear seat on the business coupe which it is according to the stamped # on cowl tag. I have personally seen the car and the previous owner wanted to install a rear seat but could not find a rear seat cushion. I believe the back is made from plywood and upholstered, definitely not original and neither is the rest of the upholstery.

The car on e-bay is similar but different. It is a 1942 Clipper Special 6 cyl. Coupe- Business #1588. Mile's car is a 1942 Clipper Special 6 cyl. Sedan-Club #1585. The business coupe did not have a rear seat and was a three passenger vehicle, while the club sedan has a back seat and is a six passenger.

Re: Considering a 48 custom eight that needs work - advice

Hi, The $15-20K would only get you an engine rebuild and paint job. This car needs everthing plus what I cant see!!! The floors, rockers and trunk probably need replacing. Doing the interior as original is very expensive also. If you have a restoration/body shop and lots of time & dollars go for it. I bought and parted out a 48 custom which had a good interior but body was too far gone to justify restoring, it was Michigan car. Good luck

JD, You must consider the measurements I provided are for used belts which have been installed and probably stretched.

John, I don't have access to the car. I do have the old original belt and it measures 52 and 5/8 around the outer/top of belt. I also have a used belt from a 1948 custom and it measures 53 and 1/4 inches.

John, I have a 47 Super Clipper and I went thru the same frustrating process to secure the proper fan belt. Gates, Dayco and others do not have the proper belt. I finally contacted John Ulrich and spent $50.00 for the repro belt. It fits correctly and there is plenty of space on the generator strap for future tension adjustment. The difference between original and repro is that repro belt has cogs. He is some info I gathered during my search

1940-47 52 1/4 od X 1" wide X 42 degrees

1948-49 53 od X 1" wide X 42 degrees

1949-50 52.9 od X 1" wide X 42 degrees

The above info was taken from Packard documents.

Good luck..

Dan, What is up with the white mesh (hair net) on the gas line? Do you have a picture showing the heat shield? It looks like it goes right up to the front of the carb, which is different than mine. Also the oil filter cartridge is Fram c-134pl, Napa 1071or Napa 1080. thanks
