Re: 1956 Packard Patrician Rebuild Project

The worst part about it is this guy has a hand full of Packard's and deals in Studebakers. He had a whole warehouse full of them and the Doc's he had, the plates on the car, etc. seemed to jive with the story. He has several Clippers he has restored so he is no stranger to them. Just disappointed it was not a true survivor as stated. We will still enjoy the repairs and the driving.

Well, now since I am not numbers matching with a jerked over engine swap, I certainly am not going to sink the money I had planed into a restore that is not original. I will just pull the engine and Tranny and replace the seals since the engine does run and paint to original bronze, rework the suspension, minor bodywork and just drive it for pure enjoyment since the investment is now gone. Note to self, move slower next time and seek verification of sellers story.

CONFIRMED KILL. The block is a 440275. Someone pulled the 374 and replaced it with a 354 Clipper Engine. Calling the seller now, it was sold as a original survivor with the 374. Someone Lied!!!!!!! I got a lead on a new 374 still in the crate. Not a happy camper at this point.

Got to Agree with (WC) "half of what's wrong with a Packard when you get it is due to the idiot before you."

Cleaned with solvent and brass wire bush and it seems clear that this engine had never been stamped. It does kind of look like possible bronze paint under the green in some spots. I guess I am on hold until I pull it this weekend and check the casting number.

I am down to wrong engine, right engine repainted and never stamped? or, Right engine and it is a incorrect painted service engine.

If it proves to be the 374, I can always paint to original color and stamp for matching numbers and be back in business.

Frustrating. Where was Carfax in 56

SKF is a top name in bearings. You cant go wrong with an SKF. SKF is a Swedish bearing company. Most of their Automotive bearings are made in India as are most car parts today. Far better than the China brands.

I got a set of Timken from Autozone that were a perfect fit for my pat.

Well unfortunately there is no Vin numbers on the front or top of the engine. I will have to wait until I pull this weekend to see if there are any numbers on back. Clearly it is Metallic Green and it is Defiantly a Carter Carb not a Rochester. Thinking more and more I got a Clipper motor installed. Other option is to pull the head and see if I have a 4" or a 4.125 bore then we will know.

Even More sick feeling. the 56 patrician 374 should have a Rochester 4GC7008610 and I clearly have a Carter which was on the 352 CI

I will do so this evening when I get home. I was doing a little work here in the office when I cam across this revelation lining up some engine paint. I will verify the numbers against the door this evening.
This is disturbing as the story is this is a one owner car that drove from 56-69 and then warehoused it in a heated facility for 45 years. I'm thinking it had more road time that at this point.

Ok, Interesting question. As I have gotten into this car, I have noticed that it appears the car has been at least partially taken down prior. Missing or loose hardware etc. One of the troubling things I noticed is that the Air Conditioner and assorted hardware was missing from the engine. Of course because I want to do an Original restore, I would have been added it back on. However, no mounting brackets, no pulleys etc are left on the engine. I will be pulling the engine this week end and obviously I wanted to make sure the engine was painted back to original. In doing so, I am now even more miffed and questioning if I even have the original Patrician Engine in the car. Why do I wonder this?

My Engine block and heads are Metallic Green. Metallic Green was the color of the 56 Executive 352. I also have a Bronze intake manifold which again was green on the Executive 352 and Bronze on the 374 Patrician.

The 56 Patrician 374 should be a Bronze block and heads with Bronze Intake. Valve covers should be Silver with Red letters however, I have the optional Chrome.

What's the consensus out there, Do I have a mismatched Engine? i.e. 352 block with pat intake?
