Hi Guys,

My 6 cylinder dip stick seems exceptionally loose. Is there a good replacemtent grommet folks have already found? My quick check is not turning up a packard part.

The dipstick on both my 39 120 and 51 200 are loose. I'll try cutting a new piece of rubber and putting it on the dipstick to see if that improves the fit. I would suggest trying Ace True Value/Hardware to see what they have.

My 47 356 is loose as well. I see there is a hole on the dipstick a distance down from the stop. Wonder what that was for or any chance there was something like a plastic button pressed into the hole to put pressure and friction against the side of the tube.

EDIT: Did some research and found a 1949 Service Counselor with pictures of dipsticks. Don't know for sure how far back or forward this design applies -- maybe 40-54?? -- but if you have a dipstick with a hole, it is for the end of a bowed length of spring wire which spans between the stop and the hole providing friction pressure against the tube.

If no hole then no ideas other than 55-6 used several bends in the dipstick to provide friction for a tighter slide into the tube.

If you look at this NOS dipstick, notice that it has a large rubber pad on it. 56executive has one for sale as well. With no stupid bidding wars.

That ebay item shows they continued the design thru till 54 so lengths appear to be the main difference. No idea on the 51-4 length unless it might be the "C" version shown here used with the new larger oil pan. For reference, here is info on earlier sticks.

My 47 stick is loose and wire is missing. Grommet is present and is probably worn so only about 1/8 wide. Has slop around the center hole where wire would go so apparently the wire is doing something.

The use of the spring wire loop as shown in post #$3 to make a snug fit of the dipstick goes back to at least the early 30s, perhaps earlier. The pad under the retainer is felt in those where I've taken note of it.

The 455572 dipsticks (lower in pictures)I have are about 10 7/8" from tip to top of washer. I have some without part numbers that are the same length but have a complete turn on the handle, and do not have the spring retainer, they are stamped. also have a 389620 2201 02 11 22 32 9 1/8" tip to top of washer 15 3/4 overall. and s 387872 2220 40 8 1/2 tip to top of washer 21" overall

Man, this is great info. All I had to do was bend the little wire, and it stiffened up the insert nicely. Upon closer look of mine, I think there's actually a little bit of felt material along with the rubber cap.
