833 detroit lubricator trouble shooting

Ive finally solved my fuel pump woes and now the carburetor is leaking gas around the accelerator.
I have adjusted the float to a lower level and didn't seem to help, makes me think the pump is so strong its pushing up the needle valve but that is just my speculation.
Anyone have any ideas to help me sort this out?

I don't recall, what was the solution to the fuel pump woes and what is the fuel pump pressure to the carburetor? If you don't know the pressure, I'd recommend measuring it. Just from the little information you give, it would seem to me logical to suspect that, unless the float has been ruptured, the carburetor problem is caused by a fuel pump problem.

Well as you know last week when I was in Virginia I was having problems with the fuelsystem. So I bought a new fuel pump so after changing the arm to make it work I feel I'm getting too much fuel now I don't know if there's a way to adjust the pressure on the fuel pump or not

Sorry, I didn't recall the details of the past go-round.

The fuel pump arm pulls the diaphragm back compressing a coil spring in the process; when the arm comes off the high lobe of the cam the coil spring then relaxes and discharges the fuel by forcing the diaphragm back, thus that spring establishes the output pressure. I don't know just what pressure is recommended for the DL updrafts but you could call David Freer and ask him - he's the guy that is remanufacturing them. I suspect the spec for pressure for the DL updrafts is significantly less than that for downdrafts - after all they were designed to run from a vacuum tank which is essentially zero pressure.

thanks I will check with him, I also am considering shortening the push rod a bit so it wont pump so hard and thorough each time.
Any thoughts on that?

Shortening the pushrod will not change the pressure, only the volume available for higher engine speeds.

I am curious how much stroke there is between the old and new pumps or were they the same. Since you mentioned changing the arm I am wondering if there are other differences.

If the drawings in the 833 parts and owners manuals are reasonably accurate, where they show the top of the casting in the center of the spring below the diaphragm and the amount of space available under the arm before it hits bottom would seem to indicate that the original pump is very limited in diaphragm movement. If that is the case I would think the volume out would be rather small. If the replacement pump is sending appreciably more fuel directly to the carb, perhaps it is a combination of volume and pressure.

The issue I have found is that the new fuel pump's don't engage at the same angle as the old one for example the old arm would be engaging the pump at just less than 90? from vertical but the new pumps don't engage to probably 105? from vertical which means there's not enough stroke in the piston
When I changed the arm, it made all the difference in the world of the pump because it engaged the pump quicker than the new arm.
