What type of oil is suggested for a 38 Super Eight 1603?

My 34 Eight has essentially the same engine; mine is recently rebuilt and I use a Shell SAE30 detergent oil called "Formula Shell" as recommended by the rebuilder, though I did use Mobil DelVac 15W-40 or Mobil Rotella T 15W-40 for many years and was happy with them. In either case, you should drop and clean the oil pan if it hasn't been done recently. If it has, you should then just periodically drop the access plate and clean the pump intake screen.

I like Castrol HD it still has Zinc.
I have used it in all of my rebuilds, from 33, 34, 37, 39, 40, 47 and 49.
I stock it because I'm not sure how much longer it will be available.

I have a 39 320 which is virtually the same engine as yours for all intent and purpose. I am running Chevron Delo 400 15 - 40 multi-grade. This is similar to the Shell Rotella O_D mentioned. They are both oils formulated for use in diesel engines and have additive packages a bit more conducive to our older engines.

The concern is the modern oils formulated for gasoline engines have a lacking additive package due to modern pollution requirements.

In the last years a have used a single grade 40 oil on my 1929 Packard`s, but a friend of mine has also recommended a sinlge grade 30. I have checked the web-pages from Shell, but I didn`t find the type "Formula Shell" eighter as a former or today available oil. I`m hoping you can check once the type of Shell.

I am using 15W-40 Classic Car Motor Oil in my 1937 Six Convertible Coupe and 1947 Clipper Custom. It is made by D-A Lubricant Company, Inc. and sold through the Indiana Region of the Classic Car Club of America. I like it for the multiple viscosity and zinc content features. It has worked well for me, and I recommend it.
