I'm trying to determine if a set of rivets belong or don't. I can't tell between rivets and screws that were used to hold replacement sheet metal, which ones belong and ones that don't. Also, there are two holes that were used to access screws and I need to find out for sure if metal plugs should be welded to cover the holes. Please refer to the two photos.

Any and all thoughts on what is correct would be greatly appreciated as I hope to do the welding this week.

Can you post a picture, zooming out a bit, and I'll look on mine.

Your post specifies the rear fender well, but the pictures state front, left??

Here is a picture of the holes that I'm talking about. This is of the left, rear wheel well. The holes are about 3/4" in diameter and were used by the previous owner to access the screws behind the sheet metal when attaching the body to the sill.

The 'front' referenced in my writeup was to aid (guess it didn't work) as to where the front of the car is in the photos.

I'm guessing this photo should be enough to figure out where the holes are in the wheel well.

These should help you out. Although the vintage road dirt, and old undercoating makes it difficult to see, I didn't see any evidence of holes.

Thanks for getting back to me. The 'holes' are no longer since they were plugged and welded last night. Also, welded in panels on both the right & left sides just forward of the front doors. This along with finishing the stitch welding on the panels at the rear of the car now means that I can finish the last of the body work.

I'll be taking care of this between now and the end of the year. I hope to have the car all primered before 2012 (assuming there is not rain in the forecast).

Again thanks for your help and a Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday's to all the Packardites at PackardInfo and may we all have GREAT PACKARD MOTORING WITH NO PROBLEMS in 2012!!

What may have happened is that someone in the past needed to repair the wood in the rear section and drilled the holes to access the screws that attach the longitudinal wooden body framing to the rear tub.

That's what I thought since the wood sill had been replace and since the holes were not very round. I had always planned on welding metal in place to cover the hole, but got cold feet just before striking an arc.

Always better sure than sorry. It is nice to have all the bad sheet metal replaced now. I started grinding yesterday on the 8 feet of weld that were done several nights ago. With any luck all of the body work should be done before years end and everything primed.
