Not sure why either, but for certain repairing these seems to be an inexact science. I have had that same experience, as well as gauges where the mechanism itself was not serviced - there is a pivot point where the needle swings that is on the cheapest little stamping/hinge....etc.
Of course I only figured this out after installing the firewall pad, etc, which made removing and sending it back that much more fun. Just remember that misery loves company, that must be why this website is so popular.

Thank you Flackmaster, I always appreciate your replies. I would rather have a root canal than to have to remove and reinstall the temperature unit. My back hurt me for 2 days after folding up under the dash, re-insallation was the most brutal, I guess the fun will start again for me.in the next few days.

You could test the gauge by inserting the bulb end into a container of hot water and see if the gauge needle moves.
