I have an old (1920's) Parckard part I am trying to identify. I think it is a generator. Could it be a marine part? Anyone out there have an idea what it is, what it fits and possibly it's value?

Very interesting. At first I thought this part was made by the Bijur company that manufactured lubrication systems for Packard, but that company wasn't founded until 1923 and the patents dates are in the teens. It does look like a generator more than anything else I can think of. Can you post close-up photos of the end that does not have the gear on it?

Sherlock, it IS a Bijur part, their name appears twice on the plate. And IIRC Bijur Motor Applicance predates 1923, I seem to recall Bijur ignition distributors on early Twin Sixes (or is my memory failing?). I know a website reference gives 1923 as the founding date for Bijur as a lubrication system maker, but I believe that data is incorrect.

The talk revolves around the Bijur Motor Appliance Company, Hoboken. N. J.
The following image shows a Ford starter of that time with the characteristic Bendix Assembly (freewheel) and below a generator with helically toothed driving pinion like yours.

Earliest US patent filing I found was 1911.

Quite a few by Joseph Bijur.

The date of 1923 is misleading, Bijur, as Bijur Motor Lighting and later Bijur Motor Appliance, maker of automotive electrical components, goes back much earlier, to the teens at least.

Guscha et al, I was mislead by the 1923 date given on Bijur Lubrication's successor company's own website. The odds of another separate Bijur company seemed long, so I just left the question hanging. Now I figure either the Bijur company was reorganized in 1923, perhaps through bankruptcy, or more likely a new separate company was formed by Joseph Bijur.

At any rate, it appears sometime in the early '20s Bijur Lubricating Corporation came into being with a product line of lubrication devices for many different kinds of machinery. What became of Bijur Motor Lighting Co. and its electrical products after that time remains a bit obscure, although it appears likely (per Guscha's link) to have been absorbed by what is now A.S.A.P. Semiconductor.

Toby, the part in question here looks like a generator to me. I note in Guscha's Bijur ad dated 1915, adjacent to the photo of the Twin Six, it says "the Bijur two unit starting system has been adapted to the new requirements simply by making the generator and motor cylindrical instead of rectangular. Rectangular comports with your photos. Therefore I would conclude that this part is a generator off either a 2-38, 3-38, 4-48 or 5-48 produced in either 1914 or 1915. Quite a rare item.
