I'm rebuilding my 282 and am on the final assembly. The oil galley that feeds the tappets has a plug at the end near the timing chain. A friend of mine, who is a reputable Packard engine rebuilder and has built many in his time told me that some of these plugs had a small or large hole and some didn't. He provided me with a plug, but do I use it or leave the solid plug in that I installed. Any information would be great as I am trying to figure out what's best to do to assemble my engine. Thank you

In the pictures I also provided one from a motors manual, which you can see a dark spot on the plug near the top. My friend told me the holes were always at the top of the galley

The hole is a metering valve that bleeds off trapped air in the lifter gallery and as a secondary function the timing chain gets some lube via the hole in the plug. I would be reluctant to completely eliminate the hole unless there is some other provision for air to bleed and oil to reach the chain and gears.

From what I see the hole looks very rough and elongated. Since the parts list has that same part number that is at the end of the article used in some 38 and 39 engines as well as Super 8 engines, question would be if the used replacement plug is complete or damaged and can be replaced with the same item used on Super 8s. Granted without the hydraulic lifters the low oil pressure is not as much an issue in the 282 but the hole does look fairly large and probably would let a lot of oil pass thru and make the front seal work extra hard to contain it. Perhaps a small hole in your replacement plug would suffice.

Here is an article on the Super 8 engine so you might get an idea of the oiling arrangement. Perhaps others can say what limits would be or maybe Kanter might have a new assy that can retrofit.

The replacement plug is fine. That is how your chain gets oil. Or you can drill your existing plug to the same size.

In the later 327 engines, cars with the hydraulic lifters got a sightly smaller hole to maintain pressure in the gallery. Bleeding air is a non issue on a 282 so it hardly matters where the hole is.
