Since I probably can't afford the fuel injection setup in the modification forum, what are opinions on using a Stromberg EE-14 or a Carter WD-O Carb.? I have two Carter WD-O's both in decent shape, one has a casting number of 367 and the other looks like an older rebuild has a casting number of 360. In the Dar Kuehl manual he mentions the Carter should be a 366S but I see no reason why either of the two I have wouldn't work? My Stromberg EE-14 also looks like an older rebuild but I don't see where the vacuum advance would connect, is there suppose to be a metal plate under the carb. with a connection for the vacuum advance? I also need the automatic choke connecting rod part number 302632 for the stromberg EE-14. So the question is whats the better carb. to use Carter or Stromberg?
Question #2, The fuel pump vacuum pump assembly, I'm not sure what gets connected to the left side of the pump connection or the right side of the pump connection, does the right side go to the windshield wiper tube? The car is currently not running I'm just trying to connect things up. The car was a half disassembled basket case when I purchased it and nothing was ever marked. I'm also going to replace the gas line from the tank to fuel pump, looks to me like the old gas line is 1/4 ID and 5/16 OD and about 12' long. I went to the local auto parts store and the best they could do was two 6' brake lines, I prefer to use one staight line with no connections. I looked at summit racing for what they have available but was wondering if anybody else has replaced this line and what they used ??

As far as the Carb.Choice, go with the one that matches your air cleaner. As the carbs used different air cleaners for Stromberg or Carter carburetors. I like the Carters as there are more kits and parts available. Also the Stromberg without a vacuum port, may be a 1936 120 carb,as they didn't use a vacuum advance that year. Also buy your gas line tubing by the roll. Get Cunifer(a nickel-copper) its easy to bend and almost won't rust.

I love that material for gas lines too, got mine at a reasonable price in 50' rolls at a flea market, lots of vendors carry it.

I've decided to send out my Carter WD-O carb. casting #367 for a rebuild. The linkage connects correctly and the air cleaner fits the carb. The question I have now is where does the sensing line from the automatic choke connect to? I see no place to connect it to on the exhaust manifold?

I have an image of the manifold for my 327 which I imagine is similar, there is a steel line that goes from the choke down to the chamber on the exhaust manifold. It is the black component in the image and the rusty brown hole is where the line enters to chimney warm air up to the choke.

Am curious what choke components are presently on your manifold. Parts book only shows 1 manifold for the 37 120s yet it would appear both the Stromberg and Carter carbs were available. Doesn't the Stromberg have an external linkage to a thermostatic choke mechanism located in the manifold yet the Carter would appear the choke mechanism is all on the carb.

Parts Gr. 9.106 lists a cover for the automatic choke manifold heat chamber for use with Carter carbs and Gr. 9.109 has a tube for use with Carters. I am wondering if that cover would be where the connection is located. If you are changing carbs maybe you have the Stomberg mechanism and would need it to be exchanged for the cover over the manifold chamber for the connection.

I don't believe the choke stove opening in the black manifold is present on the early manifolds which had some of the thermostatic mechanisms in a manifold chamber.


As an additional bonus and to take advantage of a great photo, there have been questions from others on where the manifold vacuum connection is located on 51 and later engines. On the green manifold the brass fitting is where the steel vacuum line to the fuel pump vacuum side outlet port would connect. The line from the wiper motor would connect to the fuel pump vacuum side inlet port. The silver item is the check valve for the power brakes and is where that hose connects.

Carter used a cover over the EE choke hole…. I put in a freeze plug and then made a cover to keep the freeze plug from blowing out which it liked to do often even when it was a tight fit. Works perfect now.

As for the pipe… I had some aftermarket goofy thing that screwed into the manifold and had a copper pipe coming out of it up to the carter. It also was a pita and I ended up welding the damn thing in. It’s still in there even though I took the copper pipe off and I’m not using it.

One thing you might beable to do…. Put in the freeze plug…. Then the cover over that… but drill a small hole in the cover for the copper tube to go in. Then direct it up to the carter choke. It just needs to heat up and that should do it.

Thanks for the info, that sounds like a great idea, make a plate to replace the Stromberg choke setup and install a connection to hook up to the Carter carb. Possibly the cover in the parts manual @ 9.106 part number 320443 that HH56 mentions could be available thru one the the Packard parts vendors? The Stromberg EE-14 carb. I currently have I believe is a 1936 vintage as it does not have a connection for a vacuum advance. Thus I decided to use the Carter carb. and other responders to this question seem to prefer the Carter. I guess I could also install a hand choke if things don't work out.
