One of the first things I started to tackle was electrics. Both backing up lights did not work and one appeared to be very rusty.
I tried to open it, but couldn't. With a carpet cutter I managed to cut through a thick layer of silicone. Someone has been very clever replacing the W-clips with silicone. After some cleaning and bending new W-clips from stainless steel welding rods and a new piece of harness I could install it again, now in working order. Next step will be installing and connecting the back up lighting switch.

Ever took off the lense of your indicator/parking light? Did you discover that grey crumbling mass that long time ago was a proud gasket?
Cut out your own from a sheet of polyolefin foam. (I took a 3mm sheet that equals 1/8''). Polyolefin does not soak water and should last for years. Yes, that light bulb is orange. In Germany we must have orange indicators. Parking light is now in the headlamp (and white). Here are some more gremlins I was tinkering with ...

It has some nastier stuff:
The trunk of my clipper was wet. Very wet and the floor covering under the carpet was rotting and literally falling apart. So I scratched it off and let the bare metal dry. On the right hand side there was a long hole starting from the rear inner wing to the last body mount. I cut it out until I reached rust free metal. Next step: Rust priming solution for the floor: Fabricating first new panel for the cut out area: Fixing the panel with some spots: To be continued ...

My 47 has the same damage where the floor and vertical pieces meet except mine is across the back below the lid opening bottom panel. Believe that same seam and sealant that was used to fill the maybe cm wide gap between the floor and rear panel continues around. The sealer on mine failed and water was able to get under and rust the lip of floor panel completely thru most of way across the back. It is kind of hidden under the bumper splash panel so if you haven't already, you might want to check yours carefully too.
I admire those of you that can co-ordinate the basic welding fundamentals and do a repair. A lost cause in my case so any attempt here and it will be deciding which looks better -- keep the existing rust holes, add a few more blown thru holes in different spots from the welding attempt, or figure out how to stylishly use half inch thick blobs of melted weld. Keeping the existing is the most promising. Maybe I can square up the damage, find a 22-23 Custom rear chrome piece and then have a way to use the holes to add flow thru ventilation. Another Packard first!! Decisions, decisions.

Interested in how you placed a parking light inside the headlamp. Is it a sealed beam type, or does Germany require a separate lens-reflector-bulb type? I know in the hot rodding community here in the U.S. special non-sealed beam type and vintage looking headlamp assemblies can be purchased with the parking and turn signal lamps inside the units. Thanks. (o{}o)

Yes.
Germany requires a reflector and a separate bulb. Reason for this is the light/dark boundary which is presumed better with the German system resulting in lesser blinding of oncoming traffic. The Americans say the same about their sealed beam system. When I changed the headlamps, I put up a big sheet of cardboard against the barn wall and marked the position of the headlights. After inserting the new units I checked again and found the shape of the light/dark boundary almost identical. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures. I ordered these headlamp units: Quote: All these 7" units are physically interchangeable with sealed beam units and the bulbs have the same electrical connection. (Unfortunately, sealed beam units are no longer being manufactured) No longer being manufactured by Lucas, I'd guess These are standard 7'' units available for left and right hand drive vehicles. You can get them here for the old-fashioned double filament light bulbs with 40/45 watts or with halogen bulbs with 60/55 watts. I chose the old-fashioned ones trying to lesser the strain on the electric system and to avoid the H4 symbol on the lenses.

Then use one or two bottles of Argon for training and weld together whatever scrap metal you can find. Then sell it as modern art and get rich If you don't like MAG welding try oxyacetylene welding or (in my opinion) even better: TIG welding. Filing holes is very easy: the trick is: put a lump of copper or brass behind the hole, then fill it with welding. This way, the weld stays in the hole instead of falling through. The back side stays flat and you only have to grind of the lump on the front side.

Thanks for the headlamp tutorial. Most interesting. These remind me of the 7" Round H4 Hellas I just installed on my hot rod, but they did not have the built in parking lights.
