A few specifics to help. It is a delco distributor and he has converted to 12v negative ground.
From The pertronix catalog this kit1183 also fits 1955-56 Packard with delco.
Are the S8 and V8 delco distributors internally the same?

The 1183 is what I have in my S8 with 12v neg gnd.

Anybody else have experience? Gregor don't believe me.

pertronix makes a 6v positive ground module as well as a 12 volt neg ground ,system they have a technical help line ,you can send a telephone picture of the inside of your distributer with the number and they will tel you the part number to order you will have to tell them weather it is a delco remy distributer or an autolite
tractors and frk lifts often use 6 v positive ground systems ,the 6v system was designed as a tractor part replacement ,they work great

1) don't use solid core wires with pertronix or e-ign
2) there is no ignitor for the one where the whole breaker plate rides on ball bearings inside the distributor, like came on my 50 288
3) i used a 51 327 dist where the whole dist body moves to advance, and you can see it jump around when reving the engine. They make a kit for that one.
