Is the adjustment for the brake shoe in the slot at the bottom of the drum? What took do I need to adjust it? Thank you

The proper tool is one like this available at most parts stores. If you have a screwdriver with a thin enough shaft and strong blade that can reach into the slot enough to reach the star wheel it will work -- although having the bend is convenient for those cases where the straight screwdriver can't get much swing or leverage.
