Interesting. I would like to know too and hope someone is familiar with the construction. Will say that if that piece is part of and required to connect to the coil then the replacement coil is not the same as the stock Packard item.
On the stock coils, for the coil wire to distributor Packard used the same type terminals on both ends as is used for the distributor cap end on the plug wires. The terminal and wire was pushed straight into the coil opening and just like modern coils, a rubber boot covered the end of the coil and opening.

Need a better picture showing the top end and side obscured by the coil and part number. I see some kind of ring holding something on that's not shown.
I suspect it might be easier to get another coil. ps; found a similar one, that shows the boot for the spark feed wire. With part number can look up more info. Attach file: (15.92 KB)

I am surprised no one knew that coil was used on 30's to forties Chrysler products. Just push the stripped wire through the screw in part and fold about 1/8 inch of the wire end over or ask any 30's Chrysler guy how to do it.

Mistake on my part - the little ring you are referring to is on the lanyard of the flashlight that I used to prop the coil up for photo purposes.
The part number for the Coil from my 21st series parts list shows an Autolite CE-3224-US-1 4.1203 Coil and Case Assembly (0394131) Thanks much for your help and input on this

I'm still having issues in getting a suitable connection to this coil. I've inserted and trimmed the wire into the coil as suggested by the helpful folks that have responded to me on this, but the wire can easily be pulled out - there is nothing retaining it even with the boot shoved down as far as it will go. I've tried 7 mm and 8 mm wire, with metal conductors, with no noticeable difference.
So what am I missing or doing wrong here?
