There is a stop inside the trans case to keep the gear from going in too far.

If you need the entire cable and housing-adapter assy, then probably the vendors or possibly used. If just the inner flex cable, then most parts stores have universal cables you can cut to fit with an assortment of ends to work with various drives. Too bad you need one for an automatic as there are NOS standard trans cables on some vendors ebay stores.

I need the whole assembly. Somehow the inner cable twisted the outer shielded into a knot and broke both. Imagine that.
I am batting a thousand with speedometers lately. I checked a few vendors online but didn't see anything like the one I have. Ross; So if I put the gear in the housing and insert it everything should line up. No Surprises ? When I removed the gear there was a pretty big void in there which makes me wonder. Thanks again. OTG

Am assuming you have the adapter and gear since you ask about installation. The cable and housing should be fairly available new or used. According to parts manual, #421081 is the same on all 23rd-54th regular Ultras..Max lists one although his description says 51-53 and says the picture is "typical". One of the posters here may have something available or Kanter or possibly David Moe at Seattle Packards.

HH Thanks for the input. I saw the "typical" cable and the years. Your right the one I have has a metal oval shaped housing that the gear slides into. This housing mounts to the trans with a plate and 2 bolts. Will check the vendors .. didn't know about David Moe will check there also.

I'm a little confused as to what you have. Do you have a one piece cable like that used on standard trans cars similar to the one in the first photo from packards1's ebay store?.
Or do you have the gear adapter such as packards1 also has for sale in the second picture which uses a separate cable such as Max sells in the third picture that attaches to it. That second and third picture combination is what the parts book says should be on your Ultra. Attach file: (21.10 KB) (17.72 KB) (19.54 KB)

I have the second and third also. So thats what the cable is supposed to look like. Mine had a big knot at one end. 8)
So the "typical" that was listed for a '51 is the one here (#3)? and the correct one for mine? What is the part number for this one ? Saw a couple on Max site. Did you ever remove+reinstall the cone #2 on yours? I am going home this evening and putting the speedo gear in the housing #2 and slide it into the trans. I am really concerned that the gear will slide off and into the trans housing and cause me a world of grief. Any words of wisdom? At least cable #1 comes with the gear etc attached not a problem there .. done a ton of those. No brainers. OTG
