On my v8 trimming cover seal I just used a thin layer of grease on each side.

I haven't oiled them first as I don't want it to slip in the retainer; I install it dry and then liberally wipe the sealing surface with light grease like LubriPlate.

BE sure to install the harmonic balancer BEFORE tightening the timing cover bolts. That tip may of may not be covered in the service manual, i don't know. Either way, install the balancer BEFORE tightening the bolts.
Edit: If the timing cover is on DOWEL pins then it won't matter.
