your original mirrors are aftermarket clamp on. The mirrors you bought are factory accessory and the photo shows where they were mounted. And yes, they stick out and are fairly fragile. They were used in 21-22nd series

Here is a template for a 23rd series mirror that O_D posted While the mirror mounting method and base is different from the 21-22 series mirror you bought, the overall shape of the mirror is the same. From what I can tell looking at various photos the location stayed the same for 21-23rd series. The template has a dimension of 6 1/8" from the door edge so you might check and see if the factory location suits you better.
The set of mirrors I bought came with a spacer strip which fits in the molding to keep the raised portion from being crushed. It is .175 thick x .325 wide and the same length as the mirror base.

Thanks for your replies. Especially the bit about the spacer is very helpful.
There's only one thing that I personally really don't like: These screws. Just to imagine screwing them into the door lets me cringe. I think I will fix two nuts on a sheet metal strip similiar to the spacer strip and place it inside the door and fix it there. Still it'll leave me with some new holes Regards, Clemens

The clamp on mirror in your photo appears to me to be an accessory or after market type often used on hot rods and customs. They are referred to as "Peep" mirrors. They work very well when clamped to the top of the door just in back of the vent window. Excellent coverage from the driver side and reasonably good rear vision from the passenger side one.

Howard,
looking at your post from 2015/5/4 regarding the placement of the exterior mirror on the door moulding. Where did you get the set of mirrors please? James bjsgarage@ctesc.net

They were or may still be in reproduction. That particular set came from David Moe at Seattle Packards via one of his ebay listings. If Dave no longer has them Kanter may have some since he does list the mirrors. Check out Group 33 -- Accessories -- section of the 40-50 Packard specific page.kanter.com/packard/pac-450.html That style is the 42-47 Clipper thru the 22nd series 48-9 models..
