90% of Mustangs were powered by Packard. What a fabulous engine! Not only did it have tremendous performance, it had to operate at high rpm's for hours at a time.

We need to remember that the first Mustangs (P-51As) were fitted with the Allison V-12 engines. Most of these first generation aircraft went to the RAF in England. The English found them to be lacking in range, speed, and altitude performance. The RAF, to improve performance, installed a few Rolls Royce Merlin engines to test in their Mustangs. The performance improvement was outstanding. The rest, as they say, is history.

Looking at that instrument panel reminds me of my time working on PBY Catalina's and DC3's in the 1960's except I wasn't on the lookout for an enemy fighter on my tail. I can't imagine keeping track of all those instruments while in combat. The men and women who flew these machines certainly were the Greatest Generation.

Merlins, Mustangs, Spitfires and the world's greatest generation. Now watch Spitfire 944 a 14 minute short film of a (now 83 year old pilot) seeing film of his crash landing during World War II. The documentary was filmed in 2006 and won an award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Worth every minute. youtube.com/watch?v=ie3SrjLlcUY
