Are you speaking of the anchor bracket on the thermostatic valve positioned behind and sort of above the glovebox on the firewall or some support bracket in between the knob and valve? If on the valve, there was an early and late version valve on 22nd series models and the details could be different between the two.
If it is the valve, the cable operates a mechanical cam assembly to move other pieces which vary pressure on the portion of the valve that controls the water flow. If some part of the mechanism is corroded or just sticking it would add a lot of resistance to the point something might not move full travel or the extra force needed could even cause someting to bend in trying to move.

Hi Howard.
Mine is a very late 22nd series - February of 1949. The bracket I'm talking about is the one down behind the glove box area next to the heater box. Without having a picture of one that is correct to compare it to, I don't know if I would be messing things up by bending it.

Is this the part? If so, there is a fairly intricate mechanism inside the box to open and close the flapper doors. If the bracket or lever on yours is bent the problem is most likely inside the plenum.
