Can someone take a picture of what the style bolt/screws/washers are used to secure the hood ornament to the hood. My car came without one, I want to put it back on the car for now, but I want to make sure I am buying the correct style hardware when I run over to Lowes.

Thanks,

You'll have to rely on someone who currently has one of these for a pictures as I sold my 54 back in the 70s, but as I remember one or more of the fasteners used a cup-type washer against the hood sheet metal.

Packard used that cup-type washer #183962 in 1956 to hold skirt trim on, to hold power-window relay/circuit breaker on cowl lip and in many more places. I have never seen it on any other vehicle. They must have had more than one as the washer for Kev's hood orn. is #469400.

So since it uses a cup washer, I imagine then it uses a screw as opposed to a small bolt. Any ideas on the screw size/thread pattern. I just checked an I dont have any screws or bolts that will thread into any of the holes. I dont want to carry the hood ornament around Lowes if I can help it. Though I would imagine it would get a few interesting looks!

Your ornament was an accessory on your Clipper. According to my parts book the accessory ornament does not have a parts breakdown. I checked group
0.0345 and found what I think is the screw size you need --6 each 10-24 x 1/2". Good luck

Here's some pictures BigKev- on neither of my two hoods were they 100 percent cups - each had flat washers in places. But they could have been lost on both hoods in 57 years.

And yes, they are 10/24 by 1/2", (Dallas is correct), phillips, with a star washer and a cup washer. If a 10/24 doesn't fit, it's probably because someone forced another thread pattern in there at one time. You should be able to run a 10/24 tap in there, but since it's very soft, you will have a hard time knowing if you are cutting or cleaning.

Thanks, that was the exact size I needed!

I went over to Lowes and bought 10/24 x 1/2 inch stainless steel oval head screws, and #10 finish washers. I asked for cup washers and they looked at me odd. I guess finish washers are the new name for them unless those are something different.

So home I go with the hardware, and then I go to test fit the ornament on the hood and discover I am 2 holes short. I forgot that the standard Clipper ornament was shorter. So I traced the ornament on the hood, marked the center line and measures out the two additional holes I needed in the hood. I just used a step-bit to drill the two additional holes. The hole in the front is pretty small as it only needs the screw to pass through. The new hole in the rear has to be bigger similar to the other two rear holes as the ornament posts actually pass through the holes and act as alignment pins. Only problem I had is that on the holes where the posts stick through hood, the finish washers were not deep enough to make the ornament fit flush. So I slipped a rubber grommet under the finish washers on those holes to act as a spacer. There must be a thick large hole washer that is supposed to be used on those ones.

Carl,

Thanks for the pictures. Looks like the cup washers are different then what I got (finish washers). So looks like I am going to have to locate a few of those.
