Fred and Dan have a 56 Caribbean 5699-1080 they have owned since 1963. According to the previous owner, Millard C. Faught, in the late 50's the engine had a catastrophic failure and a new replacement engine was installed by Packard New York City. The engine has no serial number and it was and is the standard '56 Bronze.
Over the years they noticed that the stamped metal "cones" in the venturi cluster were missing in one carb. Packard had a service bulletin on that I believe and called for replacement of the venturi clusters with one piece case units. It is possible that "swallowing" the venturis caused the failure thanks James

Having looked at a lot of cars over very many years, it seems blue was a favorite color for many commercial rebuilders. AAmco used to paint their transmissions blue. If I see one under a Packard I have a sudden drop of blood pressure and motivation signaling an aahyweh (abandon all hope ye who enter here) attack.

It was Packard's intention that 1955/56 service replacement engines be painted the correct color for the application, with the exception of a number of 55 engines which were inadvertently painted incorrectly - see TSB 55T-33 for details.

According to former owner #n+1 the engine had been rebuilt for a 55 or 56 clipper model but was filled with water and cracked the block. Former owner #n+2 removed all of the new parts inside of engine and gave the cracked block to me, owner n+3. When i got the block some 15 years ago the blue paint was all still good condition. NO traces of any other color on, in, around nor under the blue paint.
