Gents,

I seek your comment on the attached photo's of the under seat heater from my 56 400. In particular, take note of the orientation of the heater core. I assume that the operation is intended that the fan draws air in from the top and then pushes the air out of the vent at the rear of the heater housing after it has been pushed through the heater core. You will note from the photo's that this is not possible as the core has been assmebled so that air can only flow up/down rather than from front to rear - i.e. there is no way for the air to escape the heater housing... All indications are that this has been assembled like this from new. Can anyone confirm that this has been assembled incorrectly and that I am not going nuts? I hope the photo's attach OK...

Yours looks 90 degrees off. Maybe a core change was soldered in wrong?? Odd it would have gone 50+ years and no one noticed a problem from the start -- but Packard did have their problems. Wonder if Packard make them or outside vendor.

McCord & Modine were the sources for the heater cores. A good guess about Packard Downunder's core is that it was repaired at some point and the tanks incorrectly attached.

For sure you have an incorrectly oriented core. Here is a pic from mine when I rebuild it.

Thanks for your responses guys. The logical conclusion is that it has been repaired at some point and reassembled 90 degrees out, however it does look like it has never been touched from new and has definitely been done many years ago. Thanks again.

Maybe it's simply a Downunder anomaly. I know the water flows differently down there... perhaps you should have a look at your radiator while you're at it...
