ACOlds and I along with some other friends attended the Norwin Saturday night cruise as usual. This restored Mack C-cab showed up and Al and I strolled over to get some pics. It was a 4-cylinder powerplsant that sounded like a hit-or-miss engine. I think Al may also have gotten some pics of the Pierce-Arrow that showed up.

Those early trucks always fascinate me in how well they did with the construction and mechanics of the day. Granted some were not much faster or couldn't carry much more than a horse but the weight they carried with the tiny mostly rear wheel brakes kind of makes you think. Looking at the unguarded chain dangling down and the roads of the day. I can't help but wonder how many things (or drivers) that might have got caught in them and how long they lasted before breaking.

I agree Howard, I also have always found those brutes to be fascinating. The chain drive really had one huge advantage; for different axle ratios all you had to do was change sprockets and add or subtract a few chain links and get pretty much anything the situation called for. As I remember the Bulldogs that did the excavation for the Hoover dam had a final ratio of 10 or 12 to 1.

Renault in it's earlier years had the same type of engine cooling, fan was intergral with flywheel and with a bellypan pulled the air in and forced it out thru the rear radiator at both sides. Later Bulldogs actually had shutterstats on both radiator outlets.

I like the details ob the chain and the radiator plus a pic from another cruise with all orphans and a brain trust of knowledge

The Kish brothers and I attended a large cruise in Wexford this Friday. Some unusual rides.
A 1950 Frazer in beautiful condition.
A 1956 Stude Golden Hawk with Caribbean manifold and dual carbs. Tranny was Ultramatic.
A one-of-a-kind custom drawing on Cord for looks. Body work and paint by my friend Mike D.
An enjoyable Friday evening.

I briefly owned a 49 Manhattan and liked it very much. The interior was beautiful and extremely comfortable and it was clear that K-F had done everything in their power to provide some real quality on top of their plain vanilla body shell and chassis. I have never seen, on any car, seat cushions built with so many springs. The drivetrain was not technically scintillating but the Continental six, the Borg Warner overdrive, Spicer rear and Gemmer steering all played very well together.

The 56J engines were painted red?

I bought a 2X4 manifold the had traces of red paint, but I thought mabe it was from a Clipper.

Know I know it could have been from a 56J!

I don't think any 56J came with dual 4s.
I'll leave it up to someone familiar with the Hawks to describe the paint.

Red must be traces of a prior repaint, or perhaps a dealer installation as no clipper engines were offered with a 2x4.

The Frazer was very nice restoration sure he has more money in this car than its worth I assume he is among the group who do it because they admire the make. This car has been in Hemmings Classic car magazine
Also a very nice 56 Buick Roadmaster . In case anybody hasn't figured it out Randy and I favor near or stock cars .
As usual talked to a lot of nice people and a few experts who think they know more than they really do.
