The original diaphragm was a specialized paper, kind of pinkish/orange in tint. It was very long-lived, mine was still in excellent shape as of a few years ago but I did choose to replace it with a rubber one from C&E.
I had exploded views of the internals that I got from Bendix (who bought the business from Bragg/Kliesrath) back in the 60s but haven't seen it in years, not sure I'll be able to find it. You might ask C&E for a sketch. Do I assume your valve was not functioning? That is, you got the same amount of boost regardless of the amount of boost you selected? And you do have boost? That is, the other vacuum valve, the one on the pedal linkage, is functioning along with the vacuum piston/cylinder? Note it too uses a paper diaphragm, also available from C&E.

Dave,
This thing was completely froze up, the previous owner had the vacuum plugged. I pulled a vacuum on the vacuum cylinder and it moved, so I assume it is good. Going to make a new diaphragm out of rubber. I have been driving with no boost, it stopped but you had to push real hard on the petal. Attached is a photo of the diaphragm I am going to copy. Thanks for your help. Richard

Dave,
How does the Vacuum Control Assembly work? Does it regulate the amount of vacuum, is it adjustable? I assume the selector switch inside controls something.

It's briefly described in the owner's manual, as I remember the 4 positions are 25, 50, 75 and 100% application of boost. IIRC at max the unit is providing something like 600# of force on the brake linkage. You're a tough guy to drive that car without the booster, I'd consider it close to an absolute essential for safe driving.

I got it, made a new diaphragm for the booster valve and control assembly, pulled a vacuum on the booster cylinder, it was good. Started it up still vacuum leak, started at the engine and worked my way back and found out the original 1934 vacuum hoses were leaking. Replaced all hoses, started it
up, no leaks, drove it around the block and what a difference it makes, will stop on a dime and leave change. Thanks to Dave and Barry for all the information. Richard
