Fantastic Engine Noise Problem

I'm going to try to get a picture of this 12th series Packard Eight problem up because I've never seen anything like it.

In the mean time here is a symptom list:

a) Intermittent gear like rattle that sometimes sounds like a loose water pump bearing and changes to tappet like rattle.

b) Noise most prominent on valve side of motor.

c) Moves around motor from front to middle to back.

d) Testing with stethoscope excluded water pump, timing chain, and fuel pump.

e) Sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't.

f) Non-load and non-temperature sensitive.

Good luck and congradulations to anyone who has seen something similar. I have a file of wierdo noises, but this one takes the cake.

Hint, I have included the cause within this posting.

this is a shot in the dark for me but i am guessing that it could be that somebody put a file in the motor and it would rattle when the engine was running ---- and I am by no means a mechanic this is purely a guess. LOL

Here is the picture I promised. Somebody put a file in the motor which rattles when the motor is running.

This is typical of what I deal with on a day to day basis.

That's like the rattle caused by a beer bottle some auto worker threw in the rear quarter panel before applying the upholstery panel. Took a garage several months to track it down and fix it.

Maybe it was some mental defective mechanic's idea of helping the car's owner should he ever need to bust out of jail.
