Hi

Am I to assume that 902 was a nice original the owner just couldn't help himself but "improve" with an unnecessary restoration?

A few upper-series restoration projects:

A '49 22nd Series LWB sedan:
http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/5171184315.html

A '50 23rd Series Custom Eight:
http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/5181277323.html

A '51 Patrician, in primer, some chrome done, lot drives:
http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/5193988913.html
(Rather like the clean sides without the trim)

Another clue to its being a Henney is the extra grille section between the bumper and the bottom of the normal grille - this was to accommodate the approximately 2" increase in height.

Hi BDC

Not to worry, no complete pre-war Packard was sacrificed for that rat rod, that little bit of body and radiator shell section are just the remnants of cars long since rusted and weathered to extinction. Since the thief-proof number were still visible, that and the radiator shape must be enough to name it a Packard.....sad mess.

A few more, if less 'cool', genuine Packards:

An either '51 300 or Patrician by the three piece rear window, asking $1,600:
http://ventura.craigslist.org/cto/5197067554.html

1953 Clippers:
A two door Special, solid NV car:
http://reno.craigslist.org/cto/5157703041.html

A Deluxe four door, finish up and enjoy:
http://mohave.craigslist.org/cto/5144279741.html

A rough Mayfair, cheap:
