If you continue to have overheating problems with that 356 engine, you might consider checking the timing. If the timing is retarded too much, Packard straight eights tend to run quite hot. Adjusting the timing on my '50 Custom solved the overheating problem for me.

Of course I learned this bit of information here on PackardInfo.com

Yes, Owen, you are correct. The Brigg's Body Number plate states 2255-2711. I think I had a problem initially reading my own chicken scratch.

Thanks for the info. I knew the car was rare, but didn't realize just how rare it is.

BigKev,

When I found this site I eagerly looked through that Sales Brochure for a pic of my car. The Custom 8 convertible is shown, but not the Custom 8 Club Sedan.

JD

Thanks for the timing info. I will add it to my checklist.

Thanks for the pic, 49Packard

It's a magnificent car. I'm sure mine will look great one day, just a little shorter.

You know also ,looking at a article from m.a.d enterprizes.or whoever from hot rod magazine, they suggest have a temp gauge that the face dial is a 360 degree sweep, cause it's more accurate. Also I have just read your post and that article says you also get more accurate readings by putting the thermostat near the radiator or water neck. Very informative if you would understand ! Did packard have the right idea, sticking that in the head? Judging from M.A.D. enterprizes, or electrical , they have come to the concuslion that the cylinder head had HOT Spots in localize areas, and therfore not a good source for reading the cooling system tempertures. Praise be for the Packard! Now get to it!
