Steve, John, Dave, thanks for your substantive comments. I'll try to work through chronological.
Quote: ...Interesting Packard! Looks as if there are a few more available behind it... Yes, and a couple of them come up for sale. Quote: ...The car in question is a 1940 Custom Super Eight 180, Model 1807, 138"wb, Body No. 694, All-Weather Cabriolet by Rollson. Rollson, the custom coachbuilder re-organized from the bankruptcy of Rollston, built semi-custom formal open-front body styles from production sedan bodies on contract. The cast-framed, flat windshield versus the standard stamped-metal V-windshield is the easy identifier. Thanks for the perfect signalment. Very knowledgeable. Quote: ...Strict definition of terms such as 'formal sedan', 'berline', limousine', 'town car', 'cabriolet' weren't observed by the industry, confusingly used interchangeably when the purpose seemed to fit... Steve (58L8134), good to know. Next time, when John (JW) is eating me with such kind of questions, then I will beat him round the head with his Berline (sp.?) Limousine. Quote: ...Wonder if this '40 might be the one Jim Hollingsworth created?... Don't know but with view to the above shown pic a legitimate question.

I remember the Hutton car when it was original. Unless it was in an accident restoring it was a waste of money.

Steve, John, here are two more pics for drawing comparisons between the Hollingsworth Packard and the prodigal son in the foreign desert. The passenger compartment interior of the Hollingsworth Packard dosen't seem to be light blue. How about the characteristical dashboard?

Dave, (O_D), thanks for sweating over John's Berline. The marvelous -> coachbuilt.com defines:
"BERLINE - a closed sedan or luxury car, often with a small window which permitted the occupants to see but barely to be seen. Sometimes used to describe a four-passenger close coupled luxury 4dr sedan (usually of sporting design) with or without Imperial division. There is also some cases of use of the term Convertible Berline - see CONVERTIBLE SEDAN." The German Wikipedia makes mention of deviating French, Spanish and Italian interpretations of the term.

Another part of the Packard collection, although postwar, is this black beauty. Offered as 1947 Custom Clipper it seems to be equipped with an aftermarket A/C. Its overarticulated visibility affects adversely the historically correct appearance of this nice car.

A Packard in Finland with installed beheading apparatus.
"...The Vaasa Gliding Club acquired its first Winch Car, a Packard, in December 1936. The Packard was an open top car, with one rear wheel replaced with a cable-drum and a "guillotine" fitted on the left front wheel to cut the rope used for towing if necessary. (The Packard was lost during the war)..."
