Cleaned up the tranny some more. Man is stuff caked on. Reminds me scraping clean the front clip on the car.

Transmission serial number is: A14333

Also there is a large "3" stamped into the passenger side of the body and another "3" stamp across the two halves of the converter.

I pulled the cover off of the PB housing. All the wires were cut, and several of the fingers were burned and the plastic they side on was broken into 3 pieces. Who knows what happened to it.

How does the PB housing come loose of the shifter shaft?

To remove the PB unit the transmission must be in Reverse. then you remove the small access plate and you'll see the screw and locknut - remove them and the unit will slide off. IF your PB motor cannot be activated to put in in the Reverse position, use an electric drill to rotate the worm to the R position.

Your "A" series Twin is from a 5640.

If it is in reverse position there is a setscrew you can access by removing a rectangular plate at the bottom of the housing and remove the unit off the shaft. If not in reverse, remove the snap ring on the shaft at the bottom to remove the sector. Take the two screws on outside top above the broken finger piece off and the metal plate with fingers should come off. That will expose the gear sector and you can see where it needs to go to access the setscrew. If it is the square head you might be able to remove with narrow vise grips. If a regular setscrew and you can't get the allen wrench on then you may be able to rotate the worm gear with your fingers to move where you can work. If not use the drill as O_D suggests

Thanks guys! At least the tranny is from a Clipper. Keeping it in the family so to speak.

Another question I have, are the transmission mounts the same 51-56?

What does the "3" stamped on the case and converter flanges signify?

Any idea if this is an early or later '56 tranny?

Just like vehicle number and Utica plant engine numbers the transmission numbering began at 1001.

No idea about the "3", the attached photo of the rear of the case is typical of what I see on Twin Ultras, this one for a Caribbean (prefix "C"), I have guessed that the initials are those of the employee assembling the unit, but maybe not. The other set of numbers likewise unknown to me but Ross has probably seen more of these than the rest of us combined, perhaps he has some insight.

So based on that serial number, I assume that all of the changes outlined in this service letter have already been done at time of build:

packardinfo.com/xoops/html/downloads/STB/56T-6.pdf

Skimming through the different service letters/counselors, I can see where someone can get themselves in trouble pretty quick if they replaced a part with an earlier version during a rebuild. Lots of running changes.

The last running change I'm aware of was implemented commencing with A-13009.

I was thinking of your DD problem and some running changes made. If bushings are worn then the problem may be explained but there were some pump rotor and passage changes too. If someone without access to service articles changed a front pump or rotor on the 54 trans and accidentally closed a passage it could be a reason the DD doesn't work. The entire pump change probably not likely although they did introduce a modified 56 pump to retrofit to 54s when original stock ran out.

I know you mentioned reading thru the bulletins but you might want to look carefully at SC 30 #5 and see if Ross thinks it is a possibility. Just to be safe I would compare both old and new trans to verify the DD passage has not been blocked previously or will not be blocked with the bellhousing change.
