Yes, I am flirting with the idea of getting a complimentary copy of the A/C book for Howard (HH56).

Let the ride decide, thanks again for the linked content.
Quote: ...It is interesting the compressor has a casting date of March 1945. Wonder if the compressor was an off the shelf refrigeration item that was made to go into a commercial refrigerator of the time or a service replacement item made for Packard (and maybe Cadillac) parts stock. Either way it would be nice to find a few of them laying around. Howard, I second the assumption, that this compressor was intended to be installed into something else. Maybe a maritime application? Which kind of compressors are in the PT-boats?

With the 1938 dates on the last two clippings and the second article saying the unit was completely under the floor I would imagine these are the modified Trane units mentioned in the Henney book.
This implementation was pre Packard AC and book mentioned Henney had worked with Trane to repackage a standard commercial unit with a compressor driven by an electric motor to fit in the confined space. Book went on to mention there was a large generator bolted on the engine to provide 110v for the compressor motor.

Interesting that is says that it was built on a "standard wheel-base chassis made by the Packard Motor Car Company". Does that mean that it was a sedan-ambulance rather than one of the long wheelbase ambulances?

Most likely it means that the person who wrote the story did not know that there was a difference and just wanted to convey that the running gear was Packard and the rest was Henney. Ernie in Arizona

Ernie, I suspected that that might be the case.
