No doubt i suffer from a bit of ignorance about hoses in general. I use up alot of fuel line hose over a period of nearly every year.
I had an '80 Dodge PU with 6 cylinder that was a year old very low mileage when i bought it. It had from the factory an inline fuel filter at the carb with 2wo short hoses. Those two short hoses lasted 5 years and over 50K miles with NO sign of deteriration whatsoever. On the other hand, i've replaced fuel hoses on many other applications and can often only get 2 or 3 years out them and operating under nearly ideal conditions compared to what the Dodge operated under. I've tried good quality brand name hose and some discount parts store no-name hoses. I use up alot of hose due to many engines. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to what makes a hose last or not last. I've experienced similar variations in hose life with radiator hoses too tho i use alot less radiator hoses than i do fuel line hose. If someone can explain this mystery to me i'd sure be greatful. It's always baffled me to some degree.

Fuel line hose and Fuel Injection Hose are two different animals. The Fuel Injection Hose is much stronger an rated at a higher PSI Burst strength. Even thought it's more expensive, the Fuel Injection hose should last longer.

Kevin, I applaud your efforts in the restoration and I think an aux tranny cooler is a good idea. However I think if you mounted it upright you would get much better airflow over a larger area than your slanted mount. To take it to the extreme, think about how much airflow you would have if it were laying completely flat? I have attached a pic of mine to show you what I mean.
I use Valvoline type FA fluid.

actually if you draw a straight line across the fins at a diagonal the line is longer than if it was completely vertical. so, therefore at an angle the wind will draw a line that is longer than straight ahead causing more cooling across the fins.
just an observation.

G'day all, I have found over tha past 40 years that the only part of the Packard Ultramatic cooler that rusts are the easily replaced inlet/ exit ends. I would also urge caution as the maximum allowable backpressure from the converter is 30 PSI. The backpressure lowers the direct drive clutch application pressure. That is if your DD Clutch pressure from the rear pump is supposed to be 180 PSI, a converter return line pressure through the cooler of 30 PSI will result in a 150 PSI application pressure. I have found that some of the non OEM Packard coolers installed are restrictive and have a back pressure around 20 PSI. I am not saying not to use them, just get a larger rather than smaller cooler with plenty of flow. I would also recommend a three-eighth inline transmission magnetic/10 micron particle filter in the cooler line. If you find that there is over 20 PSI back pressure you can replace the restrictor in the upper outlet of the cooler line at the trans with a non restrictor fitting, as installed in the bottom( return) line. The Ultramatic will very rarely overheat if it has correctly changed over from the large front to the smaller rear pump. best regards Peter Toet.

Grille was placed earlier today into my '55 400. The disguise is now in motion; so let's see if I can keep this transmission cool as the heat of the desert summer approaches.
