You might consider checking the primary voltage at the coil while the starter motor is engaged. Pull the high tension wire from the center of the distributor to prevent the engine from starting while you take the measurement.

Ok Thank you
I'm going into town tomorrow for plugs and wires, so I'll take that reading soon after that trip. Fingers crossed on the pertronix, a buck n half out the window would really not feel good! I had also bought their Flame Thrower coil. If the solid state is a no go I should still be able to use the coil, I don't see any reason not too..

.025 is the factory spec. If you get your Pertronix to work you could try .030 but it will make very little difference at the compression ratio and speeds we are talking about in a 54.

Quite a regular

I have been corresponding lately withc5ignitions.com/c5-technology.html regarding ignition for my Mercedes 1973 SLC.
I have not ordered anything yet as the owner/producer of the system is not at home right now but he seems to be a helpful and skilled person. At this time I have the impression that it is impossible to install and keep the standard look but in my opinion this system seems more modern compared to Pertronix. I will probably buy a system for the SLC this winter. That might give a possibility to see if it could be applied to a 356 Packard without disturbing the original appearance. I have very mixed feelings regarding upgrading of old vehicles. On one hand if a car was made in a certain way and is modernized the feeling of a historic piece might be lost. On the other hand I am very happy with modern rubber in my tires or modern oil and grease that limits the need for oilchange several times a year and frequent engine overhauls.
