The other day while driving on the expressway, I had it in overdrive which worked fine till I let off the gas, it went into "freewheeling mode". It works fine giving it gas, but has no engine braking when de-accelerating. What part quit?

That's the nature of the OD unit. No engine braking.

My friend Paul in Las Vegas took out the T-10 4-speed and put in a 3-speed with OD in his 1956 Exec. It works good with his 4.11:1 rear end. Oh yeah, this is the one that's controlled by the pushbutton shift. Try duplicating that one.
