I have looked through the books I have and found some info on adjustments which I followed, but was unable to remove the slop. It appears that that there is play in the splines on the cross shaft and the steering arm. I was not to happy about the idea of rebuilding the box, let alone the R & R. As I used a five foot bar to tighten the nut on the cross shaft. I believe the splines are not tapered. As anyone out there been into one of these boxes and have any advise. Thanks Dell

Seems impossible, sure you don't have mis-matched parts? Are the splines noticeably worn? Or perhaps the arm has a hair-line crack that expands on installation and application of turning force? No unusual amount of force should be needed to tighten the retaining nut, just good and tight.
