Next I took a bolt and made a nut insert tool with a nut insert to go inside the lifter.

I inserted the nut insert, turned the bottom nut to compress the nut insert. Next removed the bolt and inserted a longer bolt though the valve guide with a slide handle.

That got the exhaust lifter out but so far no luck with the intake. Also here's a picture of the lifter, notice the marks on it. So I'm guessing the guy who rebuilt this engine before tried his best to remove them.

Well, I've decide to put the engine back together and pull the engine out this summer and put the original engine back in after going over it(the original engine).
I can't find my tool for checking valve clearances, does anyone one have the drawings so I can make a new one? Plus I found out all my spare Hyd. Lifters are for a Cadillac.

Yeah, the Cadillac Wilcox-Rich lifters don't interchange.
A few years back at someone's request here I measured my 356 tappet tool and posted the dimensions on this site. Try a search and if you can't find them here or on PAC's forum, I can remeasure but it will probably be some time next week.

JD, if memory serves the important part is the height of the top (biggest diameter) step as I believe that step sets on the edge of the cam follower.

You're right of course. The gauge doesn't bottom out in the tappet, it rides on the rim. So, that makes it 37/64 in.

I get a bit less using a dial indicating vernier caliper, about 0.562-.566. The tool I'm measuring however is not an original but a reproduction.
