Is this a 53 or 54 engine serial number M310352
Also, is it a 288 or 327--how do you tell by those numbers?

1954 Clipper 327. There is a listing on this site, as well as in shop manuals and various other sources. Here' part of one covering your question, courtesy of The Packard Club.

No need to look outside of PackardInfo. Our webmaster, BigKev, compiled and uploaded a Packard Engine Serial Number Reference to this site's Literature and Manuals archive - under the Miscellaneous Packard Information category. I find Kev's chart to be fairly comprehensive, yet easy to follow. It shows that your engine number falls in the range for a 1954 327 - with solid lifters, as used in Clipper Deluxe models. This chart is also duly noted in the FAQ post on IDENTIFICATION: Engine Serial Number Reference. Many good "Answers to Frequently Asked Questions" can be found via the FAQ forum.
